So hang on, is the purpose of this thread to be a place we can actually talk about the new Thief game without people trying to out-gay each other about how quickly they can come to the worst possible conclusions about every piece of information we get?
sorry, sorry, I mean 'out-lame' or something non-offensive, sorry.
Anyways, this idea of a large city hub with free roaming stealing is pretty goddamn exciting innit? It does make me wonder though, what will be spending all the money on? It seems a bit wrong if it's just going to be equipment. I mean, stealing to pay for more stealing is a bit gamey. It would be cool if they had some kind of fixed costs mechanic, where you have to pay the rent or buy food. Or you are strongly encouraged to save up for some goal, like your fabled retirement fund or something similar. Maybe even working it so you have to pay to save your game... actually scratch that, that would get annoying very quickly. But something practical you actually need the money for except equipment, or that's not some kind of (realistically) fairly asinine lair embellishment.

Apparently Garrett can store some of the loot in his home as trophies of some kind (or that these are special loot that are not meant to be sold anyways). It is definitely not certain it is implemented this way, but that would make looting the "hub" a bit exciting with the possibility to find rare loot. Then again, keeping trophies is a bit odd for a fellow like Garrett - is he that vain?

I decided to bail on the subforums until they stopped consisting primarily of posts by people who will throw an entitlement tantrum over any Thief game that isn't made in the dark engine. So basically I'm never going back.
On a side note, it sucks that a fan community can actually make me question whether the Thief series really are my favorite games of all time purely because I don't like my tastes relating in any way to those dorks.
We aren't talking about things specific to the Dark Engine or 1990s game tropes, but design choices
regardless of the engine.

jtr, you are fighting strawmen and sometimes losing.
I need to replay TDS, I can't remember how this was dealt with then. I sort of remember you just had to buy equipment, but that it was quite expensive. I'm guessing this must have occurred to the devs as well.

You turned stuff in at fences and bought stuff from shops, as far as I can recall. Would be the logically route to go with the new game. I am also rooting for multiple fences that are specialized in certain loot and possibly limited space for carrying it (to force the player make choices). I am 95% sure the limited space won't be in though.

I was kinda disappointed that after all the talk of rent in the bonehoard intro you go on to spend all your money on new toys. There is still the motivation to get as much loot as possible in classic Thief because it doesn't carry over, and you want to be well equipped, but with persistent loot (TDS had this, right?), how do you avoid the situation where you don't need to bother stealing anything? Because you have plenty of equipment and money? Did that happen in TDS?

It's been years since I played Deadly Shadows, but the loot did carry over so if I remember correctly, I had lots of gear quite quickly Then again, I practically got all loot and hardly used external stuff besides the blackjack, water arrows and sneaking. I'm remembering it to be "fairly" balanced loot-wise anyways.
I remember disliking the classic Thiefs for only considering the loot you've got in the previous mission. No explanation why all that money you've got is vanished all of a sudden. Of course, it served it's purpose in restricting the player a bit, which was a good choice.
