That makes it sounds like the hub in Thief 3, which was okay for the tech but which would be dull if it's redone.

I think it's going to be a greatly expanded version of that. Like you'll have this massive city landscape that'll have you flitting around on the streets, the fire escapes, the clothes lines, the rooftops, and so on. But only the occasional few buildings will be completely open for exploration. Everything else will be set dressing.
I'd say game will be based around days instead of a the old one mission to the next setup like in T1 & 2. Like you'll get an oldschool briefing at the start of a new heist, which always begins at your super cool rad clock tower hideout, and the missions will always include running between it and your next job then back again for a complete day, with some optional stops or various run-ins with the law happening in between.
This is all what I've guess based on the tidbits of info the developers have given us thus far. It's hub based, but still has cutscenes and mission briefings. This setup makes the most sense to me.
Edit: I know someone's gonna pop up from Down Below and say it. Yes. This will probably be the part of the game where the parkour will come into play, and the bit that takes the most cues from Assassin's Creed and Mirrors Edge. It won't play exactly like them, I don't think. But you're gonna be traversing the city a fair bit quicker than you did in T3 or Life of the Party.

Hopefully more Mirror's Edge than AC. The latter is basically push up, press a button or two and look cool. ME you at least feel like you're working.
Already had small exchanges elsewhere with people who don't want too detailed climbing because it'll be too slow and boring. That is somewhere I tend to agree with the purists: if they or anyone are overly worried about Thief being 'slow' they're somewhat at odds with the concept there. (my attitude is mostly the same regarding having to be third person in climbing too. There's nothing about first person climbing that won't work. Apparently they're putting in options to turn off 'takedowns' and other such rubbish so hopefully that goes as well)

I'm thinking it probably will be more like Mirror's Edge. Unless EM really is totally in love with Assassin's Creed, and are dead set on shoehorning it into the game some way some how, I doubt they'd want the city sections feeling entirely separate from the main focus of the game. It's not a huge stretch to think Garrett will (probably) be using about the same move set in the tighter, more focused mission environments as he will while hopping around on rooftops.
So I guess the big question is how will the missions play? Will he be cartwheeling his way around every table, pillar, and doorframe he comes across, or will it be more subdued and Thiefish?

Honestly, I don't care at all how the game plays on any difficulty besides "Authentic" or "Give Me Thief Gold" or whatever they end up calling it. If Garret is vulnerable, the AI is sensitive, the loot is shinyusing the same textures as the decorative trash objects, and the pace of the game/lethality of Garret's tools are toned down considerably then I'm onboard 100%. If every other difficulty plays like Assassin's Creed and it means they move 5 million units, I'll happily applaud that.

Really that's what I think they should be doing.
You could make a game with the exact core gameplay as Thief 1 and 2 but add a load of extra skills and tools, optional of course, for other playstyles. It wouldn't make any difference to the core game except that "core" players would probably end up using some of the new stuff too.
I wrote a little piece on this on a blog a while ago and linked to it from the Thief forums. I was received well and Rene, one of the Eidos contacts, said he found it interesting and would pass it on. No idea if anyone of note saw it of course.
Regardless, it looks like they are at least making an attempt to stick to the principles and this talk of oldskool mode and turning off hud elements is encouraging.

How so?
More than anything else I was more referring to how you have your base where you store loot/artifacts etc.

Wonder if they'll have "press X to..." takedowns.

You have this on lots of games. Doesn't make Morrowind "like" AC.
And I bet there will be Press X for takedown. I won't use it (often) though.

Trying a takedown on a haunt. That would be something.
