I don't like that particular mechanism. I find it slightly immersion-breaking. I know there is very little in the way of argument for button-take-downs versus riot prod to the neck (using Deus Ex as an example) being THAT different, but it does subtly remind you that you're controlling the guy who can do take-downs versus you ARE the guy doing to take-downs.
I know you can de-construct that to the point where you can argue that because it's J.C. doing the actually arm movement, it's not you anyway, but I still think that broadening the gap between player and action is not a good thing.

I agree totally.

Thirded. While I'll say that they probably come anywhere close to ruining the game completely, the 3rd person animated takedowns do take you out of the moment. Thief's strengths are built so much around feeling like you're there, that any interruptions to that risk hurting the game.
As long as they're kept to a minimum, I can live with them. I won't particularly love them, but as long as the rest of the game is good, I'll stomach the occasional weird hiccup.

I used a takedown once in DXHR. Used the prod after that. It uses up a whole snickers and it looks fucking naff, why bother? Yeah, I'm pretty resigned to them probably being a thing in Thief, but hopefully they will be similarly extraneous.

I think a lot of gameplay streamlining is born out of developers being concerned that they need something which NO ONE finds AT ALL difficult to grasp, but I also get the impression that at some stage, they're going to realise that if the game is good enough in terms of its design, story, feel etc.. people will have plenty of motivation to learn how to master mechanisms which aren't normalized through being taken completely out of your hands.
I'd hope that particular pendulum sees a back-swing in the not too distant future. The fact that many newer games are giving options to reduce HUD assistance and 1999 modes etc, not matter how shaky the current implementation is, does hint that devs are aware that there's a strong desire for a lot of people to tone down the hand-holding.

Honestly I love takedown moves for the most part. I will agree that switching to third person is a bit distracting tho. Would prefer it if they keep it first person like FC3 and Mirror's Edge did.

Wow, I've never seen most of those in action. I guess I sucked at disarms in Mirror's Edge.
I'd love to see something like that in Thief 4.

I think it depends on the game. Mirror's Edge is so fast that it needs to relieve the player of some agency for those kinds of things or it would kill the pace. One of my all time favourite games is Oni, which has simulated skill by the gallon, but at the very least you had to have some actual skill to trigger most of the moves, it wasn't just tapping a button when you see a prompt.

Ditto!
Good point faetal, but I think Tomi's point was that he'd like to see
first person takedowns. (Correct me if I'm wrong.) At least, that's what I'd like to see, if we must have them in the game at all.

Aren't water arrows supposed to be called dry ice arrows or something now?
Yes, that's what I read too. Dry ice is just another way of saying water arrow, because, as far as I can tell, they're still basically the same thing. You shoot a torch and it extinguishes it. If anything it's how the appearance and the impact of the arrow looks that will be different.

ThiefGen is over there ----->
This forum is for people who play games.
I think you guys are mean. That said, I understand ya'lls frustration with the other thief fans. I tried to be optimistic about THIEF, and some people in these forums think we're just being "apologists" or something. I'll be ready to shit on this game
when if the times comes. Until then, I see no reason to completely hate this game.

Mirrors Edge takedowns are first person.
I don't get what you're saying.
