I think you guys are mean.
Nothing has been said about Thiefgen that isn't true.

The thing with ThiefGen that pisses me off is the "things just aren't like the old days" attitude. It's not limited to them, but it's something that seems to infect gamers in general. I guess it's not surprising when you figure the average age of a game player now is apparently 37, but it's still surprising that people don't seem to remember that the ratio of good:shit games has always been fairly low. Every generation of every console or computer platform has a handful of phenomenal games and then tons and tons of hilariously bad shit. Hell, it's not something unique to gaming either, every generation does the "culture was so much better when I was young" thing. Music, films, sports, whatever. It's all bullshit and I want to punch everyone in the face who does it.
Anyway, ThiefGenners aren't going to like the new Thief game. I'm not saying that because it won't be great; rather, most of those people are looking for an excuse to shit on it. Go read the Thief 4 anticipation forum, it's a cesspool of baseless negativity. Hay guys vote in my new pollz! Will Thi4f suck monkey balls? a.) YES!!! b.) OMG YES!!!! c.) LOL YA d.) JAWOLL UND ICH BIN EIN SCHEISSKOPF e.) IT COULD BE GOOD IF THEY USE THE DARK ENGINE AND HAVE STEPHEN RUSSELL AND BRING BACK ROPE ARROWS f.) Other (Discuss)

Average Gamer: Hey, I'm going to play Thief 4 tomorrow. Ya wanna come with?
Thief Gen: Huh! Couldn't pay me enough!
Average Gamer: Whaaat? You soft-belly! The game's got this new engine with dynamic shadows. Last time I played, it was real eye-popping.
Thief Gen: Nah, nah! It makes me sick! When I was a kid--
Average Gamer: Huh! Surprised you're even in this job.... (Falsetto) 'Oo the graphics, it just turns my poor tummy!'
Thief Gen: Shut up, you taffer! You want Thief? You should've been there years ago! Tell ya...the games then? They were something to see. Those games, they didn't need no normal mapping and anti-aliasing, and quick-time event takedowns, and all that knifery you straps to 'em now!
Average Gamer: No quick-time event takedowns? What'd you do? Just bump into each other?
Thief Gen: Huh! Naaah! The games back then, they had AI as smart as your mother! And wicked emergent gameplay!
Average Gamer: Games? Yer taffing me! They look pretty mangy harmless, long as they're not heavily scripted.
Thief Gen: That's why I can't stand the games now! You don't know what you've missed. They just don't make games like they used to....
Average Gamer: Whoa.... Killer games. Woulda liked to see that....

You've been reading too many of Goldmoon Dawn's posts -
most Thief fans have actually updated their PCs since 1999.

Mirrors Edge takedowns are first person.
I don't get what you're saying.
I know that, I meant for Thief 4 (make them first person and like ME) and in relation to Deus Ex with third-person takedowns. However, I did assume third person in faetal's post, and he didn't actually say that, so my bad. All I meant was that I think the take downs like ME would be fine (if we're being forced into them by the developers) rather than how they were done in Deus Ex HR, even if it was a simple button press as what faetal was discussing.
@nicked: :laff: You win internet kudos for that.
faetal on 17/4/2013 at 20:32
I'm not taking view perspective into account. It's definitely a point worth discussing, but someone else already was, so I was just focussing my points on excessive removal of the player from the player character through simulated skill versus player skill. In Deus Ex, you had to get close up to an enemy and then hit them in the right place (junction of shoulder and neck was good) to knock them out. In DE:HR, you get within a certain distance, press your button and then the game takes over for you for a few seconds and then hands it back.

Re: the first person takedowns in Mirror's Edge. While I used them on my first playthrough, and tried to play without conflict on the second, everytime I've played since I actually typically prefer using her player-controlled martial arts to take care of guards. There are so many places in the game where the environment is set up just perfectly to allow parkour moves to flow into kicks and it's always beautiful. The room with the neverending elevator wait, in particular, has some great opportunities for using the step-launching pads to catapult yourself onto people.

Stepping back, two paradigms of QTE takedowns that sort of work are Mirror's Edge, where the gameplay is fast paced and you have to time it at the right moment to do a chop takedown and keep running, or you're left in a vulnerable place, and Dishonored, where you have to hold it down for some time, which leaves you exposed for that time.
Even though they're scripted actions, they still have some gameplay involved... either timing the ME chop right or freezing yourself in Dishonored when someone else might come.
The issue is if Thief4 is just be a quick chop at your leisure, and it doesn't freeze your character, then there won't be much gameplay hook involved to it, other than walking behind a guy. But it doesn't seem like T4 fits into either kind of paradigm above. Or maybe it will have its own hook.
