The Wii U is trying to please anyone and everyone, thus leaving nobody amused (except zealot Ninty fanboys who'll eat up that shit by default, but that relatively niche audience is only a drop in the bucket.). The fickle audience that made the Wii 1 popular have moved onto Facebook and Mobile (eg iOS/Android) games. Most core gamers won't touch an underpowered joke that's only slightly better than 360/PS3 (actually noticeably worse in a number of cases), established/mature consoles that are cheaper with huge game libraries.
The console is in the same vicious cycle as Vita. Developers won't make games for an unpopular console. Consumers won't buy a console with virtually non-existent game library.
This is awfully pessimistic. Wait for the inevitable price drop and some better exclusives.

The thing that annoys me is Nintendo just announced a whole lot of awesome stuff for the 3ds, yet barely anything for the wii-u except the launch of the virtual console (earthbound!yay!), all they need to do is release a Skylanders style Pokemon battle game for the Wii-u and the consoles will fly off the shelves.

Yeah, the fact that they already said "and other next generation consoles" made it rather obvious to me that they meant whatever the next xbox is. They weren't fooling anyone.

Sources emphasized the high level of talent and enthusiasm of team members, many of whom came to work on Thief because of their love of the franchise. Those same sources cited team politics and conflicting visions as cause for many departures and setbacks.
Kinda sounds like everyone is anal retentive when it comes to deciding what makes Thief Thief.
One thing's for sure about all this. Either we're gonna get an absolutely astounding game, or a really, really, REALLY shitty one. Whatever it ends up being, I don't think it's destined for mediocrity.

Funny, I completely disagree. Now it depends what you consider an outstanding game - do you put Dishonored and DXHR in that category? In the end though, my thoughts are that they'll get some things right, and the classic mode will help a lot, but there will be just enough bad stuff to turn off the long time Thief fans. I actually think this game will be the very definition of mediocrity, not all that different from TDS - good for one play through, with a few bright moments, but overall forgettable.

I put Thief 1 & 2, the original DX, Dark Souls (which I don't talk about nearly enough), and their ilk in the outstanding category. I rank DXHR and Dishonored as "Really Damn Good". Great games, but they fall just shy of reaching true classic status.
The way I see it, two things are going to happen here. Even with the clusterfuckerage (yes, that is a word), the amount of talent the series has attracted over the years, and the amount of work that's been put into it over the years could mean that someone was able to not just bang it into decent shape, but take what's already been done, and sculpt it into something truly grand. It has happened in the past, and it could happen here.
Or it could mean that it ends up being a hodgepodge of good ideas badly implemented that have been slapped together haphazardly at the last minute, given a good PR push to get us all excited, then shipped out to us half finished in an attempt to recoup the cost of 5-6 years worth of team after team of talented people screwing around, changing things up every chance they got, and wasting money like it grew on trees without accomplishing much of anything.
I really don't think it's gonna end up being a game that's merely alright. It's gonna be one extreme or the other.
