Hello,
probably this has already been done, however I couldn't find a post for it so I'll just take the risk of getting flamed :erm:
However I'm a developer, and sometime I want to get involved in the gaming industry, if possible. I've been fooling around with directx and other things in my spare time, however it would be great to do a larger project with some people. I think when you have a goal, learning is much more easier.
Don't really have a concept yet, how to do it mainly depends on how many people would be interested. Possibilities are diverse, for example we could just do it as a source-mod (hl2-engine) or use any other of the many free engines that are out there.
What I don't really want to do is a multiplayer-deathmatch-kill-some-people - mod, this has already been done years ago as an unreal mod if I remember correctly. I just want a real thief1-remake, with all those hammerites and burricks :cheeky:

Hi,
Anything you want to do like this would probably be best off using (
http://mindplaces.com/darkmod/) the Dark Mod. It's the ideal engine for it, but the team has indicated that remaking Thief could get them shut down for copyright violation. So really, you'll have to discuss it with them. Or, you could just become a beta mapper and secretly make remake all the Thief maps without letting anyone know, so you can't get shut down. Huge project for a single man though.
[edit] goddammit beaten

ok,
thanks for the links. the latest release for OpenDarkEnginge is more than a year ago, the project maybe has died. I'll mail the author.
The Dark Mod looks interesting, I'll have a deeper look at that, then maybe I'll get Doom3. Never played it and don't really know about the engine that is being used there.
Didn't think about legal issues so far. Don't really understand the problem, Thief 1 was released in 1998 or 1999, where's the problem, what's up with eidos?

No, it didn't! It is just not in the state that would be interesting+stable. Everything can be found in the CVS repository.

If you haven't done any game development previously, remaking a Thief-like game will be very difficult for you. I suggest starting out with something a little more arcade-y.

I know, this is what it makes so interesting:) I'll have a look at those projects and take it slow, probably the best thing to do.

I think that's only the case if you're trying to make everything from scratch by yourself. In that case, I could see why it would take longer, because stealth games require extra systems on top of arcade combat (eg AI, sound propagation). However, when working on a mod team where tasks are divided up among several people, I don't think it's any more difficult for the individual to be working on a stealth mod vs. arcade-combat mod.
As others have said, feel free to check out the Dark Mod and see if it's something you'd be interested in helping with.

The Forgotten Symbol is Dark MOD based project, "Unforeseen Consequences - Lost Tombs" is a Dark MOD project.
Just for clarification, neither of those are official Dark Mod projects. They were both started by Kingers using an old beta-build of the mod which he was not given permission to use. He is not a team-member or even a beta-mapper for us and assuming that his projects ever get completed (which seems highly unlikely), they would be incompatible with the current Dark Mod code anyway.
