Now, I dunno how this will make for an idea, but...
I'm hoping a certain portion of you taffers out there are knowledgeable of the mighty Half-Life 2, which is the sequal to the somewhat more forgettable Half-Life. Well, have yo guys heard of the (
http://www.blackmesasource.com/) Black Mesa: Source project?
I had a brainstorm:
If ever one were to successfully recreate the original Dark Engine, we should be able to introduce new gamers to the original thief games, with, and you guessed it, a full redux of the original game, by taffers, for taffers...
I mean, we'll have to do something like this someday, even if it involved using The Dark Mod...

Isn't someone doing OpenDarkEngine, and isn't that the whole point of the Dark Mod?
Yandros on 26/5/2009 at 17:10
What? It's not the point of either ODE or TDM to do a remake of Thief 1. In fact, the Dark Mod team has gone out of their way to avoid any use of Eidos-owned IP so as to make sure the mod remained legal.
And while I'm sure lots of people would enjoy playing a remake of TDP on a modern engine, it would be completely illegal. Even if you remade ALL the assets (textures, voices etc.) and didn't use a single binary file from LGS, Eidos still owns the IP for the story and characters.
...Not that that will stop someone from trying to do it (probably with TDM) eventually.

From our FAQ.Quote:
Q: What about copyright issues?
A: We will be making
no references to any Thief trademarks or Eidos' intellectual property. The Dark Mod is not Thief--there is no Garrett, no Keepers, no Mechanists, etc. However, since both Thief and The Dark Mod are based on a steampunk version of our own history, there are plenty of similarities.

This has been mentioned before actually, but as NH says - it would be illegal. Valve know about Black Mesa: Source and are happy with it being made, but then they are happy with lots of modding stuff (because they are cool and open minded). Don't count on the same from Eidos.

(
http://www.blackmesasource.com/) Black Mesa: Source
Hel-lo! Valve still exists? Could easily sue, but hasn't? Freedom of Speech? The large number of similar projects to make fan sequels/redux of other popular cult games? Simcity, LBA (Little Big Adventure, a game which I'm certain none of you guys have heard of), Lemmings, Quake, Half Life, Sonic (ugh) the hedgehog ((
http://www.srb2.org/) 1, (
http://sfghq.emulationzone.org/) 2), even more games than that: Boulderdash, Pacman, Abuse (a bad example, considering its own creators made it open source), and countless others...
...
Countless!
R u telling me that Eidos could easily sue when it's obvious that a similar project (T2x) was already made and nobody (nobody as in Eidos) had reacted over that, when Truart (though heavily modified as separate canon for sure) had made an easily noticeable appearance and played a minor role in the game?
And your telling me, even with these plain-as-day references, that it's simply not possible to recreate an otherwise easy-to-recreate game?!

The TDM team may not do it but an FM author still could, that doesn't make it legal though.

Sorry, I mean, HL1 was good, a tadbit viewed through rose-tinted glasses by todays standards, but still good.

Recreating it through valve is rather easy, as no one 'cept valve will be able to distribute it (through steam), so I don't think your comment about valve being "open-minded" to be all that accurate. In fact, they sell gmod (which started off as free), and that to me is pig-headed cashing in on fads that demand to be free. Hell, Microsoft is more "Open-Minded" than valve. And remember, Microsoft made Bob (shudder).
Also, besides Thi4f, since when did Eidos give a crap about the Thief series?
Really?! When?

By TDM, I meant a separate team, not the main team of TDM itself, but ho-kay...

@Albert -
Huge difference between making a level with a familiar character, or completely recreating a commercial game. As far as a lawsuit goes, it usually comes down to either an individual company's ideology and dollars, sometimes a combination of the two.
If the fans put out a exact remake of Thief: The Dark Project, and it's done on an updated game engine, do you think anyone will buy TDP? Not likely. And Eidos could see this as a loss of profits for themselves. Downloading and playing T2X, on the other hand, doesn't take a dime out of their pockets. Plus, I believe it's in the original user license for Dromed that fans are allowed to do such things.
Some companies, like id, enjoy releasing source code and other content to the community, and that's very cool. I wouldn't count on it from Eidos though.
