ITS NOT A GAME
Some people are going to be very disappointed. Look, I've spoken to a few people over the past month who really don't get that TDM is a toolset; people who think it is a new T2X. And I'd really rather people didn't get the wrong idea because I think TDM is great but people getting the wrong end of the stick will only moan and disseminate discontent. For that reason I'm keen on stamping out this "game" idea I keep reading.
I never said it was a game, I said it wasn't thief in the sense of how thief plays, based completely off of a true to god engine that works in a similar/same manner as thief. Ppl either missed the "dark engine" comment or subjective has
kindly taken the topic out of hand... for me! :grr:
Also, gnnnnn? Sounds like something out of a monty python sketch...

'm not talking about TDM, that is not a "true"
thief game as it does not try to recreate the original games from what the original games started from.
*Ahem*
This was poorly worded then. Your last post is better. I think I understand what you mean now. You're saying that TDM doesn't properly recreate the feel of the old games, right?

As in a free alternative to the original games that recreates the feel of thief, like TDM, but instead uses a full recreation/source of the dark engine itself to allow fans and newcomers alike to easily transition from one version to the other...
Now you go and say TDM
does recreate the feel of thief, but that you want an alternative. Make up your mind please.
Okay so let me understand... You are saying that you want a recreation of the dark engine. In that case, OpenDarkEngine.
Stath MIA on 28/5/2009 at 23:33
@Albert- Even with OpenDarkEngine you still probably couldn't use any official Thief resources, this includes FMs which don't completely overhaul graphics, names and such, without Eidos approval. If I got any of that wrong then please call me on it as this is just my interpretation of the laws.
PsymH on 29/5/2009 at 06:54
@Stath MIA
But for openDarkEngine you need a legal thief installation on your hard drive, otherwise it doesn't work, because openDarkEngine is only the engine - it doesn't contain any ressources.
Or do you mean something different?

I should have said "an alternative to TDP/TMA to play fan missions... made for TDP/TMA"

So you don't want TDM, but an engine that allows ports from official Thief games and which also allows users to make new FMs?

With respect Albert, you did say it was a game, as sNeaksieGarrett points out.
Have you actually played any TDM maps? Because if you haven't then you are totally unqualified to make the statement that TDM isn't Thief "in the sense of how thief plays". I don't know what you mean by a "true to god engine". TDM does work in a very similar manner to Thief because that is what it is intended to do.
Listen, I don't have any beef with you but you've mixed things up here.
You need to get a copy of Doom 3 and go play The Tears of St Lucia FM for TDM. Then come back and tell us it's not similar to Thief. You won't, because it is, just better.

Well. I would say that is untrue. If you've played what our team has made, I don't see how you could say that. The creative inspiration for Dark Mod is Thief 1 and 2.
Going back further in time, the Thief Dark Engine was inspired by the old Quake Engines. The Doom 3 engine was directly based upon the Quake Engines. Taking the inspiration for The Dark Engine into account, The Doom 3 Engine and The Dark Engine are almost like cousins. Maybe not a blood relation, but they both grew up around the same people.
Years ago. Long before we had the vast number of resources we have now, someone made a simple Thiefy looking level for testing purposes. I remember walking around that dark level thinking how much it felt like the dark engine. I didn't know then that 'Dark' had been inspired by the quake engines.
In any case. While our mod is not thief in terms of copyright materials, I feel we have gotten as close to the feeling of Thief as we can, and the D3 engine is a huge part of that. I think it's pretty close to what an updated dark engine would be.

In a poorly worded nutshell: yeth! :p
I seriously need to proofread my posts sometimes, and I apoligize if it seems I changed ideas. yeth, I want a true thief game, based on the true thief engine, or at least its clone.

Don't get me wrong: I love what the broken glass team is doing to recreate the old games. I'm just talking on the matters of recreating the original game as an alternative, like TDM, but to run FMs as well. an emulator of sorts, though its spot on.
Also: yes, subjective, I have played TDM. it's true to the original thief games in just about every way (st. lucia isn't that detailed of a map tho, but its just an example mission before the real "toolkit" comes out...
Toolkit? hello? what r u guys talking about?! If Will Wright wanted us to refer to SimCity as a "toolkit", he would've said it a goddamn 20 years ago...
Also, as pysmh said, you need the thief resources to use opendarkengine. Now, instead of saying remake, lets say thief resources alternative? I know most of you will be killing me by changing the direction of this topic again... but, how does resources sound? resources, resources, resources (minus full game remake)

Well, ok then, by that logic, creating a fan mission is playing a game. I must say, I enjoy the puzzles, but the combat's a little dry.

SimCity was a
game. The Dark Mod is
not a game. You can't
play it. It's just an editor and a bunch of resources for creating missions. You're really confused by all this, aren't you?
