@Stath MIA
But for openDarkEngine you need a legal thief installation on your hard drive, otherwise it doesn't work, because openDarkEngine is only the engine - it doesn't contain any ressources.
Or do you mean something different? :confused:
Isn't the opendarkengine project an attempt to rebuild the Dark Engine allowing for actual improvements and changes to be made to it without needing Thief? If it does need Thief then disregard my statement, but I think that it is (or more accurately, that it will be) a fully stand alone project.

No, it's a replacement engine only. You'll have to have Thief installed to play anything - there won't be any missions or resources included with it.

@Yandros- Good to know.

I want a true thief game, based on the true thief engine, or at least its clone.
And TDM is not a clone or some sort?
I hardly see how St Lucia is any less detailed than any Thief FM. And look at the screenshots on TDM website; some of those rooms are way more detailed than anything seen in Thief 1,2 or 3.

ok, I may have misunderstood a few things...
Does it mean that if I choose to make , with TDM's toolkit (once released), a FM with Garrett, hammers and pagans,
it will be illegal ?
This considerably lessen the appeal of TDM to me.
Though I guess I could get used to it...
As I badly tried to point out in my last ignored post;
does "illegal" , in this case , truly equal "bad" and "harmful to eidos" ?
if yes , how and why ?
I don't see myself doing FMs that compete with what professionals do in the near future, sadly, but...
Wouldn't FMs in TDM that happen in the original thief universe (ie: eidos' intellectual property) have more chances to compel people to buy Thief 1 and 2 ?

While asking questions, it's my turn:
1. Will it be illegal to create a city area like that in Thief - Deadly Shadows, but for Thief 2?
2. Will it be illegal to recreate a Thief 2 mission (or part of it) for Thief - Deadly Shadows?

Technically yes, but Eidos may or may not do anything to you (IF they even are aware of said FM.) Since Eidos Montreal is making thief 4 though, you might have less of a chance of getting away with it now than before the series was rebooted is my guess. Well sorry it lessens the appeal for you.That's just how it is. I applaud the TDM team for not trying to use any IP so that their mod is completely legal.:) Of course, I'm disappointed as anyone else in that regard, but I see some great stuff coming to fruition with TDM in the future despite the fact that it won't be "thief," but a "thiefy experience in doom 3."

Maybe, but then doom 3 itself isn't even that popular, and it's already an old game.:erg:

If Eidos decided to go after you, yep...it would be illegal.

Why is it any less appealing? How does it affect your story? How is it any different from FM's that don't use Garrett as the main character? We have similar factions in TDM, but with different names. Our Hammer like faction are called The Builders.
We've been up front about this for the last 5 years. We can not and will not be using any intellectual property related to thief in TDM. It will be similar enough and from the feedback we've gotten from those playing our beta FM's, we've captured the spirit of T1 and 2. That's the best we can do really.

Yes, but proving that it contains Eidos' IP would be hard. Unless you are specific about what they are supposed to be (naming them) and/or copy textures from Thief 1,2 and 3 then there is a big gray area. A guy in armour who guards the city is the city watch in or out of Thief, and a peasant who worships earth gods is a pagan in or out of Thief. Hammerites are a different thing though - although they are based on Christians.

I for one am looking forward to making missions with TDM specifically because we will be forced to create new characters and explore the new factions and mythos which the team has created. I see within a few years a number of favorite player characters which will be used perhaps by multiple FM authors. Perhaps we will also get some great fan fiction from the community based on the TDM universe and that will inspire FM authors and give them a literary basis for player characters and NPCs to use in TDM missions.
I already have a thief character (Gimfeyn) around whom I plan to make some of my TDM missions revolve. I have a number of semi-abandoned T2 FMs which were to include him (Circulation of Shadows, Broad Daylight, Hallowed Saints' Monastery), none of which are released and may never be on that platform. But he's well-defined in my head so I have something to start from.
