I found it to be a real hassle to get steam working but if you like it, great. Can get a cheaper copy on ebay though.
In any case, hard copy games, books, etc are always going to exist. It has nothing to do with aesthetics and everything to do with redundancy. Anybody who is serious about preserving their stuff keeps it in different formats in case of that house fire/power surge/whatever...

STEAM works perfectly from day 1 for me. I'd still say that hard copy's better.
With digital you never truly own the thing, instead you get the "promise" that it'll do what it suppose to. Plus the money saved on disc press/printing/packaging/stocking/transport/etc. are not passed onto the customer as suggested, it's gobbled up instead. Without shelf-life, digital copies don't depreciate in value up to a certain point (so far it appears to be $10) or as fast. Mods are not supported cus many digital rereleases have been recompiled to save bandwitch. Etc. etc.

That's always the case isn't it? When there were discs around, companies claimed that games could be cheaper if they wouldn't have to invest in copyprotection. With the advent of CDs it was said that they are secure, because nobody could afford burners, but the prices stayed the same. The lame excuse was that the technology was to expensive and they had to recover losses from previous piracy. With the advent of DVD it was the same. It became cheaper for companies, because they didn't need to deliver multiple CDs, but they still claimed that they can not lower prices because of piracy, which wasn't even realistic with DVDs at that time. Now they go into digital delivery, which means, they don't need to provide boxes, manuals, discs, etc. and the customer even pays for teh delivery itself by using his own bandwidth, and now we hear the lame excuses of how expensive the servers are, how much piracy eats up, etc. etc. It's always the same lie, but now they have the extra benefit of even more control of how you can use your content. And they already start to force advertisement into games, with the same lame excuses as ever.

People should just be honest and admit that games cost what they do because that's what people are willing to pay. The only way the prices will come down is if the entire population refuses to buy them at the current price, which is not going to happen.
