Guys, is there any detailed technical explanation of what happened in modern videocards / drivers / os so colors became crippled in Thief?

a simplified explanation is that some dx6/16bit stuff required by oldDark is not supported properly anymore.
detailed stuff was posted somewhere in the DDFix topic if memory serves. //try here: (

What does "colors became crippled" mean? I certainly haven't seen it.

a lot of ugliness was about when the first dx10 gpus started to hit the market - washed out colors, bad shadows, ugly textures and more, mostly caused by the new gpus and their drivers not supporting 16bit dithering properly anymore. it was so bad that it actually forced some people to use hardware workarounds (running multiple graphics cards). things didn't look very bright for the Dark engine for a short while, but DDfix has saved the day, and kept the games going until NewDark.

Oh I see, I missed that entirely as I was stuck on an old card for a long time during those years.

yeah, those problems were the reason why I've kept my x1950, and then I somehow got lazy and the card is still running in my primary pc. I mean it runs oldDark and NewDark just fine, and I don't really need anything more at the moment, so why not. and it's non-rohs, so it will run pretty much forever as long as I replace the caps every couple of years.
also, that topic I've linked is real fun to read.
