Yes, I have read the FAQ, but these problems were not listed.
I own the Platinum release of TDP, and am having a few problems. Firstly, the tutorial, which works for me in Thief Gold, is broken. There are no footsteps, or sound effects in general; the narrator is the only thing making noise. It is possible to simply run straight through the hiding test and exit through the door (which is unlocked to begin with), and the silence test is not completable, with no acknowledgment of your completing it, and the gate staying closed forever.
Secondly, there are issues with in-game conversations. When Garrett speaks to Cutty in the second mission, their voices stack and cut off early, making it impossible to hear what's being said. For example, Garrett might say "... or I'd have to kill you for (cut off)", with Cutty's response playing at the same time, cut off in some similar way. While I have not advanced beyond this point, I suspect that this glitch will appear in TDP's other in-game conversations.
Outside of these, I haven't noticed any problems beyond the usual, but I'm only to the second mission.
More info: I'm using a PC with XP and Service Pack 2. Specs: Athlon 3000+ 2.1 GHz, 512 RAM, an on-board sound card, and a GeForce FX 5200.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Sorry, I can't help with your problem, but I must congratulate you on having the very worst username I've ever seen on these forums.

Um, sorry? I'm looking for help, not harassment.

Welcome to TTLG! :D
Still, with a name like that, you have to expect it!

Thanks for the welcome. Wish someone would actually give me some help with my TDP problem, though...

According to "dxdiag", I'm using a Realtek driver (ALCXWDM.SYS). My on-board sound is also Realtek-made.
After reading that, I tried Thief Gold again just to make sure, and the tutorial works. I suspect that the conversation will, too, but I'll have to check that by playing the whole level. I'll try it here soon.

Try disabling the EAX features in Thief. See if that works.
Yeah, your username is pretty weird.

I had the exact same problem when I first got my Dell computer. It had the chopping sound in conversations, and I was using Realtek drivers as well. I believe I ended up giving up on trying to fix it and went to the store and bought a Soundblaster card for 15 bucks.
I even tried to see if I had made a post regarding my sound issues, but all I could come up with was:

Well I found out that after I had purchased this system, Santa Cruz had nothing to do with the production of the card. They just supplied some of the parts for it. So I didn't have a "real" SC, but a cheap OEM version that really sounded aweful. Thief was unplayable with the SC.
I personally would recommend checking out this sound card: (

It's still cheap but very effective.

I'll try that. I've been needing a real sound card, anyway. Thanks for the help.
