Hello everyone, first post here after years of lurking :cheeky:
Guess I'll just cut to the chase: I've been an admin & scripter on an Ultima Online free RP shard for seven years now, together with some other folks who helped me out with world forging, graphics and so on.
After finally having to realize how pointless it was to keep up such a big effort (it was based on AD&D Planescape setting, complete with inner & outer planes, planar factions and races, and so on) for such a small amount of players (wasn't an international shard even, we made it for italian players only - and italian Planescape fans who also know UO are unfortunately few), we decided to try something else.
Which is the reason why I'm here right now.
Inline Image:
http://www.ttlg.com/forums/images/icons/icon15.gifWe're starting to plan a new free RP shard based on The City and all those who dwell in and outside of it. The players may choose to be members of the Hammerites, Pagans or even Keepers, join a thieves guild or be the city Warden who runs it, or just go solo and be a regular citizen, a lone thief, a merchant - heck, even a pirate or a smuggler Captain Davidson's style, or a Hand Mage.
Of course, since this will all require quite an effort on our part, I was suggested to at least
try and see if anyone could be interested in such a thing. Ultima Online has lost its appeal for many even after going 3D, and I'm not so sure there'll be a lot of Thief fans willing to try a completely new game and be, say, a Hammerite fanatic instead of the guy who robs him.
And yet, I'm hopelessly optimistic.
So, what do you think? Would any of you taffers be interested in trying something like this?

I'd be interested. It's mostly a matter of the massive undertaking, and getting it tuned in just right, staying on it until it's done. It's rare to see smaller projects involving the whole of Thief reach completion. If it were to get done, I'd definitely be interested, even though I could get much involved with it online. Paradox.

Yup, that's why we're open to suggestions. :) Some game lore and places in The City from TDS, for instance, aren't quite as they are in TDP and TMA - it would be nice to come up with something that doesn't make the player say "hey, this wasn't at all as I pictured it". It will take time to get it right, and any help will be, well, helpful. :p

Are you all set up on a discussion board somewhere for this development? I can help with providing canon info and general community opinion on things not nailed down. I'm one of several people who compile lists of things about the game and was working on an Encyclopedia of the Thief Universe, but I have my own favorite theories on some mysteries, yet can bring classic opposing views from the community into the mix for consideration, so you can pick and choose, reject or use.

Actually, no - being a five-people project at the moment, we pretty much talk about it via Skype. I would be really interested in getting those info, anyway. If it's all the same to you, I can send you my skype contact - or we can keep it all in this thread, but I'm afraid it might become pretty messy in no time. :P

Yeah. Especially since none of my info is very organized, so it just gets dumped in a heap on the boards. I find things by memorizing key words including the canon misspellings, heh. Are you familiar with the Dark Wiki (a.k.a., (
http://thief.wikia.com/wiki/Thief:_The_Dark_Wiki)
Thief Wikia)? I've dumped a lot of rough lists there for sorting by the editors. It's better to search it using Google. The articles are a mess, but the lists used in their creation are a great start.
There's this sort of thing I've done:

There's a lot more than people realize, and people burn out before combing through a few missions or one whole game, heh heh.
You may end up needing to talk to taffers in the Editors' Guild for certain compilations, technical help, or means to find things:

Ooh, that's nice. :cheeky: And yes, I do visit and enjoy the Dark Wiki, nice to know it will actually come in handy. :) I'll have a peek at the Editors' Guild too, once I've taken some notes about the setting and I'm sure there'll be a fair amount of interested taffers.
Thanks a lot!

If you have specific questions, or want info in some category, let me know, and I'll get you started. Glad to help! Good luck, and may your collective stamina match your enthusiasm.

I wouldn't have much to contribute plot wise or technical wise, but I'd love to beta-test whenever its' in it's testing stages. I've kinda waited for someone to think of idea like this ever since the 'RPG table top Game' I saw once upon a time. ^^

I've actually tried DMing a Thief-based table top game years ago, turned out pretty well. Even made a Keeper Prestige Class and a glyph-based (low) magic system but alas, it has all been lost in time, like tears in rain.
I'll definitely keep you updated on any progress we'll make. Post some screenshots too, as soon as some of the graphics are ready. :)
