it's not a compass: if the pointer is pointing all the way to the left you're in the dark, but if it's all the way to the right you're in the light, and there's everything in-between there...
about the note laying on the floor in the attic, i never read it & didn't need to, so i think you're okay ;)

The main problem with that light indicator is that you can't notice how bright you are just out of the corner of your eye - you have to actually LOOK at the thing to see where the needle is. Very neat idea and cool implementation, but not nearly as useful as the light gem

I'm helpless. After I finished the treebeast the portal appears -that's fine.
But even if I go through it - there is no effect.
Are there any missing thing what I must have before?
I have "Thief2" is with version 1.18.

Dr Sahnebacke & Aspirin : also - you have to have completed all other objectives (incl loot), before going to that place. Then the mission should finish when you grab the book.

Sticky Fingers: No ! I had completed all other objectives including loot. I was transfered from old church (place with two white smoke) to place with the red portal. And the portal didn't work. I should repeatedly try to enter the portal.

Aspirin: if you've killed the beastie, the book should be floating above that circle (unless you've a corrupted copy)
