[Edit]
Just a note that this project is on hold indefinitely. I'd rewrite the engine cross-platform if I resume it. For now my time is used working on (

[Edit]
I just thought I'd post to let you guys know that
Thief2D , a project being developed by me and my team, now has a new website:
(
http://thief2d.dracsoft.com) http://thief2d.dracsoft.com
Read the news and about page to find out the details,
post any comments/suggestions in the Thief2D official forum at my website.
I need some people to do graphics and sound. I possibly will need a C++ programmer. Please e-mail me if you are interested.
Please refrain from posts such as "YOU SUX0R!!!1 IT'S GHEY!!!1" and the likes. Lets keep it constructive. *NO* programming discussion except when it is about helping the project please.
[edit 12-14-2004]
C++ engine preview is on the website.

um
i really don't see how this is going to work
what perspective is it supposed to have?
only way i could think of that would do ANY justice to thief gameplay in 2D, would be gameplay mechanics similiar to the old crusader games (crusader: no remorse / no regret)
running and jumping from shadow to shadow

Greets!
An ambitious project, but doesn't Thief in 2D kind of defeat the purpose?

Perhaps you'd drum up a little more support if you could explain your concept in more detail. Give us a few scenarios that you picture, game elements that you're translating to 2D, etc.

How so? If I can make it a good stealth experience in 2D then what purpose have I defeated? It will be a relatively small size, easy to make levels for, and will still look incredible due to the implementation of my engine (non-tile based, completely customizable with no repeating/blocky graphics. Unfortunately I can't show this quite yet until I get someone who can make good graphics. (My screenshots kind of show this if you can grasp the idea behind my engine, but for those who don't get it, my MSPaint graphics won't do.)
As far as Crusader style gameplay goes, no, I won't make it top-down. Too many games are tile-based and top-down now because people think they are better. They aren't, they are just easier to program, and take no skill to get right. A 2D side-view style gameplay can be much better than any top-down view game provided the programmer knows how to handle such an engine. If you want an example of a great 2D side-view game, check out Castlevania: Symphony of the Night on the Playstation 1.
One major thing that a side-view allows is for gravity, which is very key to arrow flight, jumping/mantling, etc. Those are not efficiently/effectively possible in a 2d top-down engine. Most of all they just aren't fun in a top-down perspective.
I wish I could convince you guys but it probably won't happen until the game is done. I was hoping someone here would recognize the potential in what I'm trying to create and might offer his/her skills in graphics/mission design/sound... so if you are one of those people please contact me.
Part of the reason I'm doing this is as a learning experience for me. Also I'm curious to see if I can make a Thief game that's good in a 2D side-view. Like my site says: learning, boredom, fun, and because I'm a Thief fan.
Also please read the site through before replying.

This sounds awesome. I've been thinking about something like this since reading up on the 'Half-Life 2d' and 'Doom2d' games. With the right graphics and the right kind of gameplay, this could really be an amazing piece of work.
Sadly, since I can't offer any help graphically - unless you think stick figures that don't even resemble stick figures is "art" - I don't imagine I would be of all that much assistance to you. I could do some mission work but that's about it.
So I'm really just posting here to counter the nay-sayers because this is indeed an awesome idea. :thumb:

Okay. I'll try.
Picture a huge sprawling castle. My engine has support for an unlimited size level. You start off, crossing a bridge into a town. There are three guards at the front gate. You notice a small sliver of light coming from above. Jumping into a tree, you climb up the branches and you peak out above the treetop. To the right there is a small crack in the castle wall. You fire an arrow into it and the wall crumbles. Firing a rope arrow through the crack, it sticks into the wall in the castle. Tieing one end of the rope to the tree, you climb across the rope and into the castle. You notice a golden goblet sitting on a table to the right, and pick it up.
Is that a good scenario?
I mean basically it could be anything. Anyone can make a mission for this game with a little Photoshop or GIMP skill.

Haha, that's funny, Doom2D is what inspired me! But thank you for your support. Once I get a few more features and some basic graphics in, I would love for you to make a mission or five ;)
A note of good news here too: I just finished implementing the gravity engine. So that opens up destructable walls in the future.

Theres now more detail on the website as well as new screenshots of the editor with its new 1.1 functions.

2d sidescroller HAS no potential as a thief game
it's automatically converted to a completely linear experience by mere definition
splinter cell could perfectly be converted into a 2d game like this - hell, you could preserve almost all gameplay elements aswell :D
but thief...
and crusader had height differences
you could mantle boxes etc
