Wow, I like this idea. I have actualy tried making a 2D sneak-em-up in Flash but without much success, I suck at coding. Graphics and/or cutscenes I can do tho. Can I see some of the graphics Hewer has done so far? If there's gonna be many graphics artists workin on this we'll have to be sure to try to keep the same style. I'm not promising anything tho, but I might try to make something this weekend and let you see.
I'm realy just getting started with animating realistic life-like HUMAN characters, check out my movie (

Hey Henke. Sign up at my Forums and we'll start talking. Hewer has JUST joined the team so he hasn't made any graphics. He said he's going to give me a sample thief walking animation though sometime soon. So come sign up in the forums and we'll see whats up!

It's an interesting idea, though one that'd also be rather complex.
Uhm, considered using multiple layers of movement? as in, different closeness to the screen. Say yeh have an open area like a courtyard or so. A guard patrols it. To be able to get past the guard without knocking him out yeh could crouch and sneak on one side of a hedge in the middle, while the guard passes on the other side?
In theory, yeh could implement a whole lot of level layers, add a top-down simple map to tell whot layers baddies are compared to yeh and make sortof-3D structures despite it being a 2D game. It'd be rather complex however, and very demanding on the graphic engine. But I don't know, it's the only way I can see the level depth fully realized?

I had thought about implementing that, and it's on the todo list. (though maybe not a top down map, I always hated those in games)
It won't make it in until release 2 though, and we're not on release 1 yet ;) Please post in the official Thief2D forums if you guys don't mind, as this thread is sure to get cluttered and people's ideas will be overlooked.
Also, just as a little aside: Don't worry about the complexity. I can handle it! So if you have any cool features you'd like to see for release 2 or maybe even 3 depeding on the complexity, let me know. At this point I'd rather have more basic gameplay suggestions however. Good ideas though, keep em' coming! (move it to the official boards though)

Okay, so how is this thing going to work? Without 2d this game is going to be hard to get used to(I think so anyway.):weird: Oh well, I guess you will prove us wrong right?
THis could be good. I mean, after all, they(gearbox and valve) are making half-life 2d, and the is going to be a doom2d also. (unless someone can tell me for sure that it is already out and downloadable, let me know.)

Doom2d has been out for quite a while. In fact what's interesting is that I had never even heard that they were making a HL-2d. I'm not a big HL fan. I think it was fun but not as groundbreaking as everybody else seems to think. I think HL2 will be fun but nothing special either really. (Dont flame, its off-topic). At any rate this game will definitly be fun. It's also nice for those who don't have a the Dromed skills to make a Thief FM but have great ideas.
I've made quite a few games in the past and only one wasn't fun and that was a fluke :p

I still only have 4 people signed up in my Thief2D forums. Are you guys who haven't signed up genuinely not interested or just lazy? It's not like it costs you anything...
I made major progress today in both the editor and game itself. So check out the webpage. We got a new logo as well.

DOH! (My brain isn't working today. ) I already knew doom2d was out. What is my problem!? BTW: HL is a great game!
-I'll be willing to download your stuff when it's all done. Also, it says you need some stuff for the background creator and editor.(can't remember exactly waht it said)
dracflamloc on 22/5/2004 at 03:37
People need to read the download page.. Maybe I'll bold this and put it at the top ;) Apparently I've not been clear. You will need the Microsoft .NET Framework installed to run the tools. It can be obtained from (
http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com)

Oh yeah, that's what it was..... Yeah, I read the download page, I just couldn't remember what it was, and I was too lazy to go look......
