Heres the most recent web-page update:

1) Well a month has gone by since my last update. Lets just say that I've been very busy. I recently got a job doing ASP and SQL programming and haven't had a lot of free time. But don't get your panties in a bunch! (O.o) I have still been workin Thief2D! I've been creating the guard AI routines and so far they are working pretty well but with a couple bugs I need to hammer down. Once guard AI is done, I will create the animation code which shouldn't take very long, and will probably add...*gasp*...BOW AND ARROWS! That's right, you will hopefully be able to shoot arrows in release 1.
2) I recently purchased (
www.dracsoft.com). It is the site where I keep all my misc. programs I've written (that I wish to release to the public), and thief2d.dracsoft.com is our new home for this project. This will allow us to have enough bandwidth to distribute Thief2D (I hope). If not, then hopefully there are people willing to help out with mirrors. But that's something for another day.
3) Heres some bad news...but it can easy be made good news! We need more people to work on thsi project! Two graphics artists and a programmer can not create this entire game! We are in DESPERATE need of an official mission designer. We are in DESPERATE need of a sound effects/music creator. If you have these skills PLEASE contact me!

You shoulda resized that pic before posting, but NO, it won't look like that. LOL. Oh man... if it were... I'd shoot myself. Read the description above the screenshot on the page.
It says: "These are just MSpaint graphics I threw together due to a lack of a graphics team right now"
And I do ahve two people working on graphics right now, who are doing a very nice job so far.
Chaos³ on 20/6/2004 at 21:51
Ah, I see.
And it's not resized because I just hotlinked it. :/ I'll change it to a text link.
By the way, exactly what will it look like? Are you going for a paper mario-type look? Is everything going to be flat as shown in that image, like some twenty-year-old game?
Scarlett on 20/6/2004 at 22:11
Heh. I just had this
exact idea, as i was recently playing Quest for Glory IV. I think it's great and all, but handling the "hiding in shadows" bit seems like it might be kind hard to implement in a 2D environment.
But still, the idea has a lots of potential. Seeing as it's 2D it'd be really easy to get that cut-scene style look for the whole thing too.
I'd also really like to see some of the scenes looking like this and such:

Edit:
Err... i guess i should have read the whole thread first. So you're going for that side-scrolling type of thing..? :nono:
dracflamloc on 20/6/2004 at 22:38
Yes, side-scrolling, but not in the mario sense. If you've ever played CastleVania Symphony of the Night on PSX you'll know the style I'm going for as far as map layout and play goes. The idea for backgrounds is that they can be very cinematic, and thats why I wrote the engine/editor the way I did. This won't be some lame tile-based gameplay. No this won't look like paper mario, jesus. Hewer has done a nice job on the Thief animation so far. It'll be shaded and not flat paper-mario style. I should have some graphics I can put up in about a week or so. Hiding in the shadows is implemented already :thumb: . Have no fear.
This game will be very good, and I think all you nay-sayers will be pleasantly surprised when I release it hopfully within a month or so. If anyone has any storyline they would like to write for this that'd be great, or if you reccommend a certain fan-story to use that'd be good too.
Chaos³ on 20/6/2004 at 22:40
I wasn't nay-saying, I just don't understand what you're going for. :)
Good luck, it does sound fairly neat.
dracflamloc on 20/6/2004 at 22:45
Yea I understand, just for anyone else who was reading it ya know. Don't want them to get the wrong impression about the game being all paper-mario-ish

As for graphics, the only graphics that I actually NEED someone to make are the characters (thief/guards animations) and loot themselves.
Well, if yeh got no better offer up and about, I could try doing some pixel arts for yeh? I'm about the worlds most lazy pixel artist, but I think I'm somewhot capable of it.
This is the best example of my (lack of) skills I can find though:
