Anyway, I'm glad you told me about the Dark Mod team, cause I was going to join their site and politely request (ie..shamelessly beg) that they consider adding a third person option for poor souls like me who can't handle first person games. But if they feel that way about Thief3 then it might not be such a good idea.
We're not providing 3rd person support for a couple of reasons. Here are two.
1. Thief was a first person sneaker. By playing in 3rd, you are essentially cheating by being able to see further than you should be able to see. That's not a slam against your motion sickness, I understand that...it's very unfortunate that you can't play with the bobbing. It's fairly easy to remove the bobbing motion in TDM though, you just have to set a few numbers to zero in one of the player files. Perhaps we can make it an option to turn off head bob. :)
2. It's a LOT of extra work to hammer out all the kinks with Third person...more work than it's worth...especially since first person is our primary target...and honestly, the most intimate way to play Thief.
3. Third person / body awareness were somewhat hacked in because it 'looked' cool. A few of the developers have said that themselves. It wasn't needed to improve the gameplay, and resources could have been better spent elsewhere. Our goal has always been to provide a straight out, Thief 1/2 inspired toolset.
That being said, if anyone insists on playing in Third person with TDM, you can switch to a third person view as there is a model for player shadows and I believe the engine uses it for footsteps and other calculations. We're not putting any resources into tweaking it for playability, so what you'll see is what you'll get.

Also; some of the FMs are almost better than the originals, imho. :thumb:
at this point i would take a moment to recommend saints and thieves, which is just about my favourite FM ever.

That is great news New Horizon, thanks for taking the time to respond (you don't seem like such an ogre after all :cheeky:). I don't know anything about the Doom engine, but if it supports a third person view and all that is needed to implement it is a player model, then that might be doable (I wonder if it's possible to extract the Garrett model and animations from Thief3?).
At least you've given me some hope that I can use TDM. I just hope that somebody more knowledgeable than me decides to tweak it to support the third person view (surely I'm not the only one who gets sick in first person games ).
Thanks again for the reply.

Doom 3 (the game) supports a third person mode natively. Since we didn't remove that code from the engine, it still can be used in TDM as well. We have no plans to intentionally break existing functionality unless we need to. We already have the player model in place, because it is needed for some functions even in first person mode. However the main issue with not actively supporting it is, that for a proper third person mode, the player character would need all the various animations. For somethings, like footsteps, we also need this, but this is the easy part. For a full third person mode, you would also need to have animations for all actions that are supported. Ladder climbing, using the various weapons, leaning, swimming, etc.. Since we are pretty short on animators, there is no good chance to expect this to be done. And furthermore, since we all agree that we don't need a third person support, there is nobody around who would do this. Of course, since this is an open project, if somebody comes along and does all the needed things, we wouldn't throw it away. So the bottom line is, that this is like with all open source content. You must take what you get for free, and if you want more, you need to either do it yourself and contribute it, or find somebody who would be willing to do it for you.

You should definitely be able to use the third person mode, but don't expect it to look good because we don't commit any resources to it.

i dunno about THAT, but yeah, we're definitely a nicer lot than, say, the NMA boys. although compared to THOSE insular little cave trolls anybody'd look good...

there are some people out there (some of the dark mod team, for example) who froth at the mouth and behave nearly as bad as the average fallout fan at the mention of thief 3.
I don't know where you get this idea. Looking at the 'TDS Sucks' threads, I see very few TDM members.

I gotta say, I'm kind of stunned, I wasn't expecting any sort of negative reaction to Thief3 at all.
That is because you obviously have no clue who Looking Glass Studios were and what they represented in the evolution of PC gaming. If you had, you would not have entered a den of Thieve's like a naive taffette proclaiming such a sweet, innocent love for a deadly shadow you hardly know yet. Now, I want you to ignore the rantings of these other crazed fools and enlist thyself into the hallowed ranks of the Dark Project anon! Take that dramamine. Sell your soul. Join usss! Join usss!
