I'm playing through TDS again right now and I must say I'm enjoying it very much. Then again, I do have the enhanced-textures pack and a ninja machine (nVidia 8800), which helps somewhat to overlook the gameplay issues.
If you haven't played TDP or TMA then you won't have the same expectations for TDS as those of us who are addicted to the point of having played every TDP/TMA FM out there (I've probably missed one or two but I can safely say I've played 99% of them).
I have the same set of issues with TDS as everyone else, I guess. No rope arrows, no sound when crouching, loadzones ("Calendra's Legacy" TMA FM would probably need an 8x8 grid of loadzones in TDS), chasing people down (Garrett knees must be shot from my crouching all the time and he can't run as fast now :cheeky:), "quickload" doesn't, falling off ledges/beams when leaning, "stand here to blackjack", swiming (lack thereof), throwing stuff whilst crouching (still thrown from standing height), picking up loot "jiggles" boxes that it's on and makes noise, can't lean forward, can only blackjack from behind, and so on, and so on...
I've recently played the Thief2X campaign/mission pack for TMA and the cutscenes in that fan-made pack were better than those in TDS IMHO. :cheeky:
BTW I have issues of motion-sickness with CRT monitors at a refresh rate of 60Hz or below. I don't have the same problem with my TFT but with CRT's I always set them to their highest refresh rate (at least ~72Hz). Don't know if this will help you, but try setting your refresh rate to max. Of course, if you have a low-end video card then a low frame rate wouldn't help.

Egads. I can't handle anything below 80 refresh...too flickery.

You're absolutely right, I had no prior experience with the Thief games and therefore no expectations at all. As a result, I loved it :cheeky:. I've played lots of games, but never anything like this, really, really amazing experience.

I have a Diamond Digital 19" CRT monitor, the refresh rate is set to 70 Hertz. My video card is a GeForce 7900 GS and my resolution is set at 1024 x 768.
I haven't noticed any flickering (at least, not with my naked eye). Do you think changing some settings might help? Will my video card support the higher refresh rate?
Also, one BIG question: Will the first two Thief games play on my computer? I'm running Windows XP (Home edition) with SP 2.
Thanks for all the advice folks.

You'll only know if they'll play on your system if you install 'em and go through the FAQ as any problems arise. I had to do five different things to get my games going without a hitch. Others claim to have had no problems, which is amazing to me. Recently I had to apply the safe_texture fix after months of never having a problem, so things can crop up.

I know how fussy XP can be with Thief 1 and 2. It works fine on my laptop, I just had to use that kernel check override thingy. It refuses to work on my desktop though, which runs the same version of XP.
I sometimes wonder what computers would be like if they had minds of their own. ADD prescription sales through the roof I tell you!
And a personal welcome Tippy! We constantly need fresh meat for the burricks, otherwise they tunnel to find food and the new steel doors we had installed are not guaranteed to stop them :D

My point exactly. Everyone's visual perception is different and what constitutes "nausea inducing flicker" will differ from person to person and equipment to equipment. I used to run my "old" CRT at 100Hz (or was it 120Hz) but my TFT runs at 72Hz and looks rock steady.
Keep in mind that if an app is synced to 80Hz (12.5ms per frame) and cannot keep up then the rendering will occur at 40Hz; if the app takes, say, 13ms to render a frame then the there will be 11ms whilst the driver spins to wait for the retrace. This is why it's sometimes better to play a game without vsync. It's pretty difficult to predict when, though.

The first two Thief games will play on your computer. WinXP SP2 and a 7900 card are just fine. They may not play straight out of the box though - you'll probably need some tweaking. There's a "sticky" forum topic at the top of the thread list giving lots of technical help. One major thing is that you will probably need older display drivers (yes, older, not newer) due to an issue with "dithering/paletted textures". I have Vista and an 8800 card and ended up installing WinXP (as a dual-boot system) and an ATI X1800XL just so I could catch up on recent Thief2 FM's.
I Googled for your monitor and, if it's the same one, you should be able to run at 85Hz at 1024x768.

That's a problem that (
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Triple_buffering) triple buffering is designed to solve. Most modern graphics card drivers should support this AFAIK.
