I can't think of anything more pointless. It's the complete antithesis of the Thief experience. No tension, no atmosphere, no plot, no gameplay, just run as quickly as you can through a predefined path that connects the loot together.
There are some points to it IMO.
1) It serves as a walkthrough, where you not only get a desctiption but also the navigation.
2) It's fun to watch.
3) At work I can't play Thief, but at least I can watch these movies when I'm in the mood. :)
Plus! If somebody doesn't like the idea he is not forced to download it.

Hold on hypocrites. Wasn't there a complete thread (mutliple in fact) on this forum where the challenge was to complete levels as fast as possible?
I don't remember much negative comments then. The 'feats' then were "I got it (Baffords) down to 2mins", "I've done it in less then a minute", etc, etc.
For me, I've not seen Thief 3 (apart from the demo) and to see levels like the Cradle have got me more interested in the game.
It also looks like Thief 3 is a bit more suited to speed runs due to the street sections.

Nice video! I've always been a big fan of speedruns (but only watching them, though:) ). Good job! :thumb:

I have never understood people who can continue to derive pleasure from the game by trying to play it with as many exotic self-imposed rules as they can think up.
Where does it end?
'I'm going to play it through without using the mouse'
'I'm goign to play it through with the monitor upside down.
'I'm going to play it through using my cock to press the keys'
Best and funniest things ever. :D
Talking about exotic self-imposed rules, this good old one cracked me up:

I think that other thread was about speed ghosting, which at least requires some Thief gameplay skills and upholds the general ethos of the game, while this is just charging through like a bull in a china shop, ignoring everything.
Sparhawk, this is not watching a video of someone playing Thief, it's watching a video of how not to play Thief
It may be a walkthough, but it's a walkthough about how to get the least amount of enjoyment from the game.

If you don't mind, we're busy sorting out scientific evidence here so go cry blasphemy somewhere else.
I haven't watched the whole speedrun yet, but it looks very quick, maybe parts of a second could be shaved off here and there. I'm not sure the "jumping up stairs" helps at all. I would have preferred to see this from 1st person perspective. This is quite claustrophobic to look at and sometimes chaotic due to the camera colliding with stuff.

If you don't like it, don't watch it! Go and play through TDS with 3+ hours for each mission if your so obsessed with gameplay, tension and atmosphere.
Speedrunning is great and I would also like to see one for TMA too. (

Excellent run! I enjoyed every minute of it. Pure gold. :thumb:
I've tried myself a couple of times for a pure-speed TDS, but my machine couldn't quite handle the load.
What I don't understand is when someone has done a huge amount of work for all the people to enjoy, and then someone comes bitching about it. It's just plain rude and stupid.

Thanks to everyone who appreciated it, really nice comments.
@plebeian - I don't care about what you said except for one part which irritated me slightly. 'What you did was play the game repeatedly and obsessively for so long, that the only drop of pleasure left to squeeze from it's dessicated husk was this. The term 'flogging a dead computer game' comes to mind.'
I didn't play it excessively. I started playing in January soon after I got my new computer and completed it by February as a hobby. When I did the speedrun I was completely new to the entire series and started two games. One I played first to completion which was the important plot/atmosphere/searching for loot etc run.
My second I ran parallel in which I looked at the level very critically, found the quickest loot method and discovered various tricks to help, then spent a reasonable amount of time trying to record it when I occasionally picked up and played. This is the result.
Finally, when you say it is easy - try watching the things and then try doing what I do. YOU WILL FAIL. Bye for now ^^

Correct me if I'm wrong - but aren't some of the T:DS missions under the "don't get seen" rule? I had a feeling the clocktower one was if nothing else. That would throw a wrench in any speed game. I'd be interested in something like the Framed mission in Thief 2 done as a speed run on expert since you can't afford to get spotted.
