Different main character, but to be perfectly honest, I feel like Splinter Cell (especially Chaos Theory) IS your modern Thief. Obviously you must choose to play stealthy for this to be true. Slap Garret's voice on the main character and make the locations fit the Thief franchise and I can't imagine what else could be improved upon.
Splinter Cell is not a modern Thief.
There's no thieving in Splinter Cell - it has a different stealth system and linear levels.

Also isn't there a bit of difference between a game based interntational espionage, and a game where the main motivation is loot?

No, there's no Thief 4. But Ion Storm was beginning work on a Thief 4 before everything when ka-phooey. It was going to be set in a more futuristic version of "The City", but still dark and with fantasy/horror elements and still with all the factions and all that. The first mission was going to be a raid on "Senator Bafford's Manor" as an homage to Dark Project.
All this as stated by "MysteryDev" on this very forum. He also posted a piece of concept art for Garrett in Thief 4, showing him looking very modern and urban with a hoodie.
To be honest I found the whole thing extremely exciting and I was tearing up a bit at the thought that we'll never see this game.
Alright, that sounds far worse than what I was expecting. Namely "Garrett in a hoodie". I need to see this. :erm:

oh come now, Garrett has a better fashion sense that THAT! :o I envision a "modern" Garrett in a longcoat (not a trenchcoat, a DUSTER, get it right you bastards!) with long dark hair, not TOO long tho, but noticably long, wearing a black turtleneck, jeans, and boots, with a silver pocket watch (why a pocket watch, i have no clue, it just sounds cool).
Thief3.com did give me high expectations for the title, which it unfortunately didnt exactly live up to, but did do an amazing job, given what they had to work with. I think personally, what they shouldve done was, if given more time, revamp the Dark engine, and add a bit more personalization to Garrett (i could see him going to a blackmarket clothier every once and a while), and a bit more of a GTAish feel, since thats what thier aim seemed to be. And most espcially, friggin online play. With totally customizable thiefs, down to thier eye color and shoe size, in a massive online world kinda like Ultima Online, but with random jobs and stuff, being able to work with other taffers or make thief factions and battle it out for turf! :cheeky:
The map would have to be damned big, im talkin about Oblivion sized. Plenty of buildings, pools, and rooftops (my personal favorite). Hmm.....
Instead of a Thief 4, maybe there will be a good Thief MMO! That would be friggin sweet if done right! :thumb:

"mmo" and "done right" are mutually exclusive. :|

i disagree with the concept of a "modern" garrett, though. it would have to be someone else.
I hate to turn this into a Thief 4 conversation, but I agree. Garrett had his time and glory, methinks.
I would envision the modern thief to be younger then Garrett was, maybe more adventurous and foolhardy...a lot more athleticly orientated...maybe with long hair and at the end of the game he gets a kata...oh god.
No but really, he should be some sort of contrasting character.

:laff:
amazingly enough that's a wig.
i really do wonder what a modern thief world would be like, though- more than just garrett's modern-day counterpart. would the hammerites invent cars? or would someone else? after all, the hammerites can't keep ALL the technological know-how under wraps, and surely with the dissemination of stuff like the big honkin' generators, someone would start from there and invent engines. after all, didn't generators come AFTER the creation of the motor car?
which leads to another question: what would the cars look like? i imagine something like what they looked like in the 40s and 50s- no japanese industry turning all our cars into streamlined electric shavers. if we can accept T2X as canon (i know i do) then we've already got trains- which leads to subways, which of course would use electricity.
electricity- would it continue to be the tesla-style we've all seen (the little rods sticking out of every lantern), or something more like edison?
there's plenty to think about.

I really feel that the unreal engine was the wrong choice for the game....considering so much of it was rewritten anyway.
They just should have spent more time optimising it...
I have a 4200 X2 Athlon 2Gb RAM and a 256k 7900GT yet with everything maxed @ 1280X1024 I get 30 frames per second at times... I get similar frame rates with Oblivion with identical settings and a much more graphical intensive game...

I have a very similar system and after upgrading to it I expected to be wowed by TDS.
I went from a 3500+, Radeon 8500, 512MB of RAM to
FX55, Geforce 7900GT, 2 GB of RAM.
It looked exactly the same and still did not play well. And I still get down to 18FPS in Oblivion outdoors (that's the low, mind you, but still 18!)
