The 'O' doesn't really work does it. I think, if it were me, if there was an 'O' involved I'd have nicked a font with an 'O' in it. And an 'N'.

Great movie, I watched it last week. I never knew about the posters though.

I don't think so, is there a copyright on the thief fonts ?
Otherwise it's a real original movie, not a copy from other movies. So if they stole the thief fonts it's not such a big deal, these posters were only for the promotion in China, it's not completely related to the movie itself. Totally different situation than with that limbo joke...
Anyway in China, Hong-kong, Taiwan and others, even if it tends to be rare nowadays this kind of thing often happens, especially with stolen musics.

No doubt, they took their inspiration from Thief's title font, but when you directly compare it with the poster you can see that it's very similar but not exactly the same font.

Happens all the time in professional font design, from what I'm told.
That said, I wonder if there has been made a full font for the movie title, or just these seven characters? Hm. Might be worth looking into.

My guess from nowhere is that it was done on the cheap by some hack for hire for the benefit of marketing the film to western audiences. If they have done other letters, judging by the hash they've made of the O and N (not to mention the E) then I'd not be interested anyway.

Now I remember, the thieves in the movie use razor blades, like the one on that poster, to defend themselves and steal people goods. There were even kung-fu fights with these.
Thief's font suits perfectly the idea, the title got written with razor blades. :p

The stupid thing is that someone (The Riddler, over at Eidos? It's been years since I set foot in that place) did actually finish and freely release a pretty good complete font based on the Thief title letters. If the person who designed that poster had bothered to use it, the N and O might not have been so useless :(
(edit: oh god and the E too, you're right... All I can think is that they were after some kind of resemblance to a particular chinese character by using only one stroke for the arms of the E and the F together. Still looks really sloppy, though)
