I'm on Assassins and found a Hammer? plaque under water that lights up. I press it and nothing happens that I can tell. Anyone know what it does? Is this relevant to a later mission maybe?

You are quite correct. In comes into play in a later Mission.
If this is your first time through this wonderful game, may I just say enjoy it. Really try to savor as much as possible. This is one of those classic games that if you get into the story, you will be changed after it's conclusion.

Sorry to bother, my of Dark Project is borrowed and came without the instructions. How does Garrett climb onto ledges and such?

Did you even bother with the Training mission? It tells you in there. And the Readme.wri file tells you too.

To climb onto a ledge, one must simply approach it. When you are right up against and facing the desired object to be mantled, press and hold the Jump key. Default is Space Bar.
Please, don't give up. Brother Murus needs your help, and you are probably still a few Missions away?
