Ok. Its late. I can't sleep. Need to vent...
So I was playing through the original Thief Gold again. Nothing new or special. Just needed my fix after a few years of not playing on a regular basis.
Got to the Guild. I honestly hate this mission. Its long, full of boring tunnels, and the architecture makes me want to barf. I mean, I don't think its the worst mission I have ever played but it really pisses me off. Just when you feel that you are making progress, there is another key you have to go all the way across the map where you just were to retrieve it.
Does anyone actually like this mission? Please help me like it.. haha

Heh heh. Where's Dia? :D
Anyway...your opinion is fairly common.
It seemed unfinished to me. The empty sprawl of it made it seem wasted, and it seemed too plodding at times. I do, however, like some of the locations just fine. More often than not I would get the missing rope arrow bug, and so, I haven't played the mission much. I wish the areas near each leader's hideout were more treacherous.
Although it slows the story down, I really do appreciate the idea of Garrett showing the Thieves' Guild how unskilled they are compared to him, including accomplishing that in a way that the leaders suspect each other before they suspect him. I like that Garrett is played up as THE Master Thief, and that the player can feel that, knowing his/her own skills fulfilled the mission objectives.

Yes, not the worst mission I have ever played, but certainly the worst OM.

huh? What's wrong with the level. Sure it's kind of hard and huge... i for one had to check walkthrough after i got the key to the safe. But the level was good. Just could have been better.

I know how you feel, this is yet another mission that spoiled TDP/TG for me.
I got lost many times and ended up running at guards slashing furiously in frustration. Yet again a walkthrough showed me the way(it wasn't too clear either).
However it did have some funny conversations in it like the front door scene and the two gamblers.

Thieves' Guild was planned for multiplayer.

I liked this mission, it just takes time and patiance to get to enjoy it. Sure the maps made me scratch my head trying to find out where I was and some of the architecture in the mission felt a bit... flimsy, but if you slow down your pace and get into a "exploring" mindset (and get over the fact that this mission is fairly difficult to ghost) then it can be quite fun.
If trudging around from place to place gets a bit repetitave I would suggest perhaps cutting the mission into 2 to 4 segments and then playing them seperatly with hard saves inbetween (eg. Part 1: Break into the Sewers, Part 2: Reuben's House, Part 3: Donald's House, Part 4: Loothunting). Also, taking the time to go over each location carefully for hidden loot helps minimize the risk of ending up short with no idea of where to look for the rest.

I liked Thieves Guild a lot. There was a great sense of exploration in this whole underground lair system, very cool, on my favourite maps! Interesting how we all can have such differing opinions and feelings.

The map, the level story, it was all just thrown in there without any real connection to the game story. The developers could have taken the thieves guild story and expanded upon it and made it into a new expansion or side story to TDP universe. The developers could have multiple Thieves striving for control of the wealth of the city. Garrett is caught in between.. some want his help and some want him dead. It forces Garrett to walk a fine line. Garrett is just trying to make it out alive and with a little bit of loot from the whole situation. In the end, Garrett walks away the only one untouched with a big pile of loot. The developers could fill in the details. Who's up for another unofficial expansion??
