It's not a bad level. It does feel a bit unpolished, but it's supposed to be a thieves' hideout, not a noble's mansion. I really enjoy exploring, and I didn't find the layout any more confusing than the Lost City which had me going around in circles, too. I did like the story where Garrett is SO good that he can make utter fools of all the others.

On several occasions when I've tried to get people into Thief, the Thieves Guild was the mission which stalled their playthrough and kept them from ever playing Thief again. Their loss, I know, but still... :grr:
While it was never my favorite, I'm not a hater. The first time I played it I think I felt mildly frustrated in the middle of it but then I felt really satisfied when I completed it. More so than many other missions, it felt like a real accomplishment to successfully work your way through it.
BTW: Is there a way to set Thief Gold to skip the Thieves Guild mission without using the skip key combination? I mean, if I'd like to create an install for a friend that just automatically goes from Assassins to The Sword mission briefing.
I know TDP does this, but if someone wanted to play through TG with just the Thieves Guild mission skipped, is there a setting which accomplishes this?

The map, the level story, it was all just thrown in there without any real connection to the game story. The developers could have taken the thieves guild story and expanded upon it and made it into a new expansion or side story to TDP universe. The developers could have multiple Thieves striving for control of the wealth of the city. Garrett is caught in between.. some want his help and some want him dead. It forces Garrett to walk a fine line. Garrett is just trying to make it out alive and with a little bit of loot from the whole situation. In the end, Garrett walks away the only one untouched with a big pile of loot. The developers could fill in the details. Who's up for another unofficial expansion??
LoL that's sounds like a cool idea. So yeah, whose up for an expansion?
Oh and lol, Twist xD. C'mon, is that level really the hardest in the entire Thief I + Gold?
Plus why don't just tell your friend to better skip the level and perhaps own it after completing all other OMs. Heh, hehe...
Twist on 29/10/2008 at 19:50
Um, I never said it was the hardest level. :erm:
But according to several video walkthroughs I've seen it seems to take the longest to complete... for many people, at least. That doesn't necessarily imply greater difficulty. It could just imply greater tedium. :cheeky:
And I'm not talking about helping any one friend. I'm just curious if it is possible to create an installation of Thief Gold where the Thieves Guild mission was automatically and seamlessly skipped.
It's no big deal. I'm just curious if it is possible. :thumb:

It's very easy. Just open Res/Strings.crf in Winzip, and modify missflag.str so that this line:
miss_15: ""
becomes this line:
miss_15: "skip"

To be honest, I feel like all the missions they added in Thief Gold were poorly executed. The architecture in Song of the Caverns was just atrocious, and Mages' Guild wasn't much better- lots of big, square blocks.
Twist on 29/10/2008 at 21:31
Thanks, nicked! That was really easy. :o
Since there is no mention of the Thieves Guild or anything that happens during it in any other mission, cutscene or briefing movie, skipping it is entirely seamless and you miss no part of the overall plot or characterization.
To me this seems to illustrate how distinctly unrelated and incongruous the Thieves Guild is to the overall game.

On the bright side, if I remember correctly, Thieve's Guild has the highest number of possible knockouts (69) amongst OMs of all three thief games (not counting the Maw of course).

I'm one of the people who really didn't like this OM... in fact, it was one of my least favorite among all the missions I've played. Nothing wrong with a mission being large and complex... however, this one was just too damn tedious. I had to use a walkthrough, too...
I've only played it once, so I won't dismiss the possibility that a second play-through might be more enjoyable... something like the TDP undead missions were to many taffers out here: first time round - hate them, second time -

Ok. Its late. I can't sleep. Need to vent...
So I was playing through the original Thief Gold again. Nothing new or special. Just needed my fix after a few years of not playing on a regular basis.
Got to the Guild. I honestly hate this mission. Its long, full of boring tunnels, and the architecture makes me want to barf. I mean, I don't think its the worst mission I have ever played but it really pisses me off. Just when you feel that you are making progress, there is another key you have to go all the way across the map where you just were to retrieve it.
Does anyone actually like this mission? Please help me like it.. haha
Me again. I just Finished the level, I think the only person's life that I spared was the guard patrolling the streets outside of the restaurant. LOL. I am not a friendly Thief sometimes.
I have been playing this game ever since it came out and I have to say that I think this is only my second time playing all the way through the Guild.
Yes I agree that is an interesting but out of place plot. Too bad the architecture feels out of place from the rest of the game too. As with all of the other TG missions that I think are just lacking and felt rushed.
In response to YuSef, That is an interesting proposal to possibly overhaul and clean up these missions. If I knew more about Thief editing, I might feel inclined to get that project rolling. However, time is a factor that simply isn't there for me.
I am interested. What would people do if they took on this project? How would you change what already exists?
