How do Keepers pay their rent, then?
dr. cello on 6/6/2004 at 00:27
You know, that's a really good question. How do the Keepers sustain themselves? Do they have legitimate jobs?
Some Serious Dough on 6/6/2004 at 01:35
I think about it as in the fic "A Thief in the 30's"; a Keeper in it said: "You think Garrett is the only one who found other uses for this shadow-blending ability?"
Whisper on 6/6/2004 at 01:46
So, all Keepers are thieves?
Some Serious Dough on 6/6/2004 at 02:07
Maybe... it doesn't matter.
dr. cello on 6/6/2004 at 02:22
I think it matters. They clearly don't take donations (since nobody's supposed to know they exist), but it seems unlikely that there would be Keeper gardens or farms to support their existence, and I really doubt that all Keepers are thieves. That would probably be unbalancing.

I don't think keepers are thieves at all. Spies, yes, but not thieves. When they refer to Garrett as a "thief" they always say the word with utter disrespect and loathing, as if the very thought of the activity made them sick.
As to how do they get funds, i think that's one of those things that aren't taken into account for being irrelevant to the story. If i had to give an explanation i'd think some of the Keepers run businesses or power positions from where they can obtain money. Some might even have everyday jobs. I don't think all Keepers do is staying at their library all day long. The scribes would, and a few other scholars , but i think the order also has members who are more dedicated to learn about the real world and make contacts and look for possible safe havens and hideouts. These members would be in a position of performing more worldly chores as getting funds through trade, businesses or personal donations (made from rich people to the keeper him/herself, like patronizing an artist or paying one of your scribes or accountants. In this case, Keepers have a double identity: the everyday joe and the secret, always vigilant keeper who uses his job or business to keep a close eye on the world happenings around him/her).

Since Keepers are always getting killed in weird places like the Lost City, etc. while on missions of exploration, they may partially support themselves as explorers and archeologists. Archeologists being carefully defined as not "thieves." Sort of semi-ethical Indiana Joneses - who pick up trinkets while pursuing knowledge.
I assumed the Keepers would quietly lock Gamall away somewhere ... if she didn't die of extreme old age immediately after that cutscene. After all, it was only the glyph-magic that had sustained her life all these centuries.
I was thinking along the lines of the latter.
Redearth on 7/6/2004 at 01:40
I figured with her lack of glyph-support, she would die rather quickly. I thought that was hinted at, especially based on how old she looked in the final cutscene.
