Monolith had absolutely nothing to do with XP or PE. The only "canon" for FEAR is FEAR 1/2 and Reborn.
Which didn't stop Monolith pilfering the expansions for bits and pieces to reuse in FEAR 2. Plane crash scene? Check. Visiting the replica prodiction facilities? Check. Fettel "getting better" after you killed him? Check. Heck, that last part even happens in a church!

Well, we agree the story in Condemned 2 was a steaming piece of shit.
FEAR's gameplay is solid but works against itself in my opinion. You play as a super soldier outfitted with machine guns, lasers, and even a mech. And you have bullet time. It's not scary. It's not terrifying. It's stylish and fun. I'm content with that but, and maybe this is the marketing department run astray, my expectations in a FEAR game are. Just my opinion, but the Condemned games seem, at least at their essence, more about what actual fear should be. You're just an average guy, using whatever you can find as a weapon, in locations that resemble places you've seen or walked past everyday with the lights out and the grime up.
I mean the very mechanics in Condemned FORCE you to get right up close with your enemies. No bullet time or proximity mines to help out here.
Listen, I like the FEAR series. I own both games. But personally, whenever the lights flicker, the "ghosts" appear, and Alma does her ash walk I roll my eyes. FEAR is a great shooter and but I think Condemned does the horror genre far better justice, that's all.
Also: am I the only one who, when FEAR was first announced, thought this potential franchise would follow a F.E.A.R. team to different locations, combating different paranormal threats, like a R-rated Ghostbusters? We're now seeing a THIRD game and I can only hope we leave the industrial complexes, sewers, and warehouses for something a little more interesting. I know Carpenter is a consultant so I have hope the story is fresh.

Also Sulphur is dead fucking wrong about FEAR 2, but we forgive him.

Absolutely fucking not. Condemned 1 is solid
and C2 is great if you ignore the story but FEAR is by far the better series.
goddamn FEAR haters. deth, we are in the minority here apparently. FEAR is the most awesomely instense combat ever. Great settings for the firefights, and REBORN is one of the best pieces of DLC ever released.

I can understand hating the FEAR games. I don't really understand why people hate the second one and like the first one, though.
Sulphur on 31/1/2011 at 05:00
I think I outlined that in my post, no matter how high I was. I won't rehash that because I've got larger needs right now (involving the strongest, blackest coffee you've ever drunk) but Fear 2 didn't do much that the first one hadn't already covered - well except for the ending and the mechs - and in some cases, did it worse.*
If you didn't like the first FEAR, you obviously wouldn't like the second given how similar they are.
Edit: deth, gunny, we're gonna haf ta AGREE TO DISAGREE! If there's more you disagree on, we can have a nice, quiet discussion on the finer points in a session of Magicka.
*Oh fine, rehash time: the sequel's story isn't worth following compared to the pure fucked-upness of the plot in FEAR, the engine has seriously gimped lighting even on the PC compared to the original, the weapons are the same but I'll be mourning the sound of the shotty for a while, and the AI simply doesn't seem as co-ordinated or smart this time around.

The ending of FEAR 2 takes the cake for hilarious fucked-upness. Monolith should get a medal for putting that in a mainstream FPS; I fell out of my chair laughing.
I don't think it's fair to call the lighting "gimped" just because it's less dynamic. FEAR 2 has a lot more light sources and subtler/softer lighting effects. I miss the shadow volumes too, but considering how much more complex FEAR 2's environments are, I don't think you can blame that one on the consoles.
