Stop, take a big deep breath, and think. This isn't doom, like others have said, this isn't a shooter game. You actually have to think before you make a move. You shouldn't be seen, if you are seen, be prepared to pay the consequences, and act and defend yourself, or just run like a chicken and hide and evade. Take your time, savor the game, why rush it.
There is no game out there quite like Thief. :->

Yes, quite right.
Thief is one of those rare "action" games where once you have been drawn in, you savor every last moment. Of course, that is standard fare for most of the classic rpgs. :)

Hello catacombs - now the zombies are FUCKING EVERYWHERE.
So, you're saying that the zombies are having a big orgy down there... I must have missed that mission (and I am quite content with that).
Anyway, smart-ass comments aside:
If you are used to running into a room with guns drawn, a big grin and killing everything that moves, then Thief will appear as being very hard. Instead, put the guns away, wipe that grin off your face and dig up some patience. Thief isn't that hard once you've gotten used to the idea of what sneaking is supposed to be like.
Move slowly, Stop for a while and think, analyse your surroundings. Find alternative routes. Use rope arrows to climb. Douse a torch to create a more comfortable shadow to hide in. Learn how to use your other equipment. After a while, this will come natural and you can move around more quickly.
There are no guarantees of course, but chances are that you will soon be sucked in if you just give it some time. Good luck! :)

Part of the appeal is suspense and atmosphere. Drink it in. Savor it. And the day you suddenly "get" how to play, you will be on your way to becoming a Master Thief player.

He's like my cousin. I tried to show him theif, explained the stealth genre, told him he'd get his ass kicked if he plays it wrong, but noooo, he just wanted to go around killing guards.
I guess only a certain breed is made to play old school thief. (granted the stealth genre has grown, but sill.)
um...
fuckity fuck fuck
(strictly so the original author can understand)

So this is your doing. Me thinks Rameriez is going to send a few errand boys to fix your little red wagon.:erm:

The stealth genre is Thief's bastard child, or nephew, or cousin, or...something else. The other parent is mass-market catering. But, those companies do gotta make money, so they turned Thief into "Assassin".

Thanks for all the tips. I wasn't so much looking for hints but merely wanting to express my... impression :p I'm not really a twitch player ala doom, I'm a big fan of SS2 and enjoyed DX to give an example.
But I am not also the super stealthy never-kill-anyone either. I'm somewhere in-between - I employ tactics and stealth when necessary, but also like to clear the areas of any dangers so I can roam freely...
I have a question about equipment and gold - does it transfer to next missions? Sometimes I try to conserve my resourcess for next mission, but if I am seeing things correctly, it doesn't seem like it transfers over.
Also, sorry about the f-bombs. This is my first post in Thief forum and, lurking in other ones for the past few years, TTLG has made me quite desensitized to cuss words :p
