Unless one doesn't "get" Thief--like most people, apparently.:nono:
If Yakoob continues to fight against the intended gameplay, Yanoob's not gonna have fun, anyway. Like an action-movie buff enduring a slow-paced fantasy.
-------------------------
Yakoob, the devs. created a variety of mission-types because they were unsure which styles people would find more appealing. They knew they were in risky, albeit exciting, territory in the creation of this masterpiece. The game you are playing was ground-breaking on many levels. The aspects that caught the industry's attention were taken and built upon in later games, but only one aspect here and one aspect there, instead of all together.
Ignoring training, briefings, cutscenes, conversations, and texts, you sabotage yourself. I'm glad to hear you say you're using the blackjack more. The less you use any weapon, the greater the game will become. Stealth and awareness of the virtual world you inhabit IS how you solve the puzzles with the greatest satisfaction.

OLOLOL HOW CLEVER!!!!
Must've missed out the post where I described playing Thief exactly the way it was meant to be. In fact, I never actually implied I was playing this like a shooter; the furtherest I went was running past the zombies which, considering their speed and the type of the game, actually is not a far fetched idea at all.

Yakoob: I understand your frustration. The "sound sensitivity" of walking on marble floors in this game was WAY too high. The sheer number of zombies in this game was also a big complaint point (notice that in T2 the "zombie-fest" was removed). Hang in there. ;)

It's your choice of words, like the original thread title, making you sound like the typical action-gamer wrestling with Thief. You sound miserable half the time.
Killing burricks. Running around. Bunny-hopping. Peeking around a corner and getting caught.
Sounds like a combination of impatience and not using the lightgem.

Quicksave abuse lets you simply brute-force through the game, which in the end, isn't much fun at all.
Different people have different views of what is fun. I've seen people here who actually enjoy slaughtering every enemy they see. That's not the way I like to play, but if somebody else enjoys it, more power to them. Besides, regarding the frequency of quicksaving, I think there is a difference between veteran taffers who know the game like the back of their hand and a new player who is still trying to grasp the concept of Thief.

Yakoob, you lucky taffer.
I well remember playing through Bafford's Manor for the first time, and how BADLY I did it. I Stank. I was Awful. I got killed by a spider in a sewer at LEAST four times.
And I was playing on Normal.
But then....
Around halfway through Cragscleft I stopped, went back, and started again on Expert. I have never gone back. I 'got' the game, somewhere in between, when I realised that I was crouching in a shadow, and counting aloud to myself, timing the passage of two overlapping guard patrols. I was watching the 'gap' that their rhythm created getting larger and larger, and suddenly KNEW that the next time I'd have long enough to stand up, run through, and pick the lock of the door before they got back.
And I felt so powerful.
Because (as theBlackman said) I had gotten better. There had been no 'upgrade' or 'level up'. I was just hot. I knew I could take these guys, and it was entirely because of my own skill.
It sounds like you are getting the game now too, and that's great. I really am jealous of you, because you have so much fun ahead of you.
Thief: the Dark Project
Thief: the Metal Age
T2X: Shadows of the Metal Age
And you get to discover it all for yourself. Wow.

Point taken. However, most of my frustration stems from the non-guard type enemies. As I said, I am perfectly capable of infiltrating a mansion without getting spotted once, but throw in some zombies, spiders and dino- sorry, burricks, and my patience quickly dies off. I remember the first time I played thief several years ago and enjoyed the first mission, but then the mine came and when I stumbled upon zombies I just stopped playing, period. Something about magical fantasy undead clashing with the perceived extremally realistic medieval thief-simulator. I suppose, as many at TTLG like to say, these element completly break immersion for me.

Okay.:) I can see where you're coming from. Those feelings are on the list of reasons why Thief didn't sell better.
And what Targa said:

Do you have Thief 2: The Metal Age? That has far, FAR less undead/creatures involved, making it much more against human opponents. In my opinion, the mission design is generally slightly better in TMA as well (although the last few missions to drop the ball a bit.)
But anyway, it might be good to play that first if the zombies are getting you down (Thief: Deadly Shadows also has less zombies, although it is isn't very well regarded around here.)
Regards.
