As has been said. For me one of the major appeals of the game is the fact that you don't find a BFG, or get stronger or faster because you do someone in or find the magic ring.
Every improvement in the game comes from you. Can't hit a bull in the butt with an arrow at ten feet? Practice, pretty soon you can stand inside the gate at the entrance to Truart's, or on the rooftop, and shoot the guard patrolling the far inner wall.
You do it, not the fancy never-miss bowsight you found.
Can't cross a marble floor without sounding like a herd of buffalo? Practice. Soon you can make your way across broken glass or gravel without making a sound. No elven slippers that keep you quiet. No cloak of invisibility that hides you.
You learn. OR YOU DIE! :ebil:
I strongly agree with this. Another example of the majesty that is Dark Project. They just piled on layers and layers of classic gameplay mechanics. *sigh*

Refusing to ruin a game's tension by constantly hammering the quicksave key is not elitism. I am a devoted proponent of save-anywhere, but it should be used in moderation. Quicksave abuse lets you simply brute-force through the game, which in the end, isn't much fun at all.
I agree with what you've said, but I just felt the urge to slap you with the title of Elitist, for my own amusement. :)

So I figured it's about time I get caught up with the classic of Thief The Dark Project and, jesus christ, this game is crazy!
First the guards are the most hypersensitive people I have met. I can't peak around the corner, they'll see me. I can't crouch-slowmo walk on a marble floor 10 feet away, they'll hear me. Dear lord, compared to what all the other games define as stealth, this is madness.
But then there's the seconed mission and hello zombies! Of course you can't kill them with the sword so they just keep COMING AFTER YOU. Fuck you zombies, fuck you to hell!
I thought the mines were bad but, boy, was I in for a surprise. Hello catacombs - now the zombies are FUCKING EVERYWHERE. Well, the hell with that, I ain't killing them, just running past. And hey, I discovered that if you keep jumping you'll start building insane speeds. So I'd just bunny hop around the zombies; that's right, fuck you zombies, I'm fucking sonic the hedgehog.
And what the hell are those animals there? Acid spewing mini zombie dinosaurs wtf? Seriously? But at least they're easy to kill.
I am playing on hard by the way. I don't even want to know what "expert" must be like :wot:
If you think zombies are hard wait till you get to the giant spiders.
The worst enemy in the game, I guarantee it.

And this isn't historical, but uses a heavily-modified medieval setting.

I remember them..the red ones are the worst ! The trick with spiders is to give-em an arrow before they see you.
If you can get into the game there is 700+ custom made missions to enjoy. Many of them far surpass the origional Thief games. Many fan mission makers have had years to fine tune the art of mission making. :)

Zombies, Spectres and Haunts are easy. Use the shadows, watch where they go and how long it takes them and pass like a shadow in the night.
But, Zombies are really easy to do away with. You have tools that you can use. In the first part of Bonehoard (zombie city) you are given *if you look and find* the tools that will wipe them out, provided your other skills, and lack of panic, are up to snuff.
Spectres and Haunts go down like any other AI, if you use the right tool and use the shadows and "silent" movement.
I won't clue you in at the moment. Finding how to use your "tools" is one of the fun parts of the game. But be aware that Burricks, Zombies, Ghouls, Spectres and Haunts are killable. You just need to read the notes, scrolls and books (and the manual), and choose the right moment and tool for the job.

...aaaand I just finished the game.
Overall, really great, I can definately see why it captured so many people, especially at the time it was released. By the way, anyone else things the engine is really amazing for that time period (semi-dynamic lightning anyone?)
Though, I still feel there were too many "zomg monsters!" stages compared to real thiefing ones. I would've liked a bit more infiltration (perhaps in a more varied setting than "mansion," "bigger mansion," and "mansion with a garden.")
However, I liked The Lost City, all the jumping around and all... made me realize how good the controls are in this game. Would make a faily decent first person platformer.
The undercover mission was totally awesome, albiet a little too easy. Boink, carry corpse to barracks, boink, carry corpse to barracks etc. :D
After that it sort of goes back to the "zomg random monsters!" mode. But at lest these monsters I could take on as if they were guards. I've also learned to become pretty handy with the sword, being able to take on the rat-guards in melee and spiders too. Also, is it just me or is it much easier to sneak around the monsters than it is around humans?
The ending was interesting. I enjoyed the non-combat final boss. The final credits totally set up for a sequel :laff:
P.S. Is it just me or does Gold version have more levels than non-gold?

\o/
Yeah, Thief Gold is expanded with three more missions, tweaks, and significant changes to Dark Project maps. The story has bits to tie it more with Metal Age. And there's the fourth "mission", the Blooper Reel, where you learn about early failed attempts to get the engine to do things. There's a goodies folder, too, but nobody thinks they're too good, overall.
The Talismans each have their own mission, instead of being paired together. The Sword mission has a cool add-on.
Opinions are mostly polarized over the value of having Gold over Dark Project.

I felt exactly the same way about TDP. Go get Thief 2: The Metal Age now - you'll find the missions much more to your liking.

Yakoob, if you also don't like the monster missions so much, as I do, then Thief 2 will probably more to your liking. It features much more mansion and city stuff, which I prefered much more then the zombies. Still as a game element I like the zombies, because I was always quite frightened of them, and still are when properly immersed. :)
