i've often thought that the dark engine would be a good choice for deus ex, actually. the whole damn game takes place at night and the UT engine is a resource hog.
sure, it looks really good ... _really_ good ... but it's gameplay that i'm after, and the dark engine is more suited to it than the UT engine.
i don't really think it looks that bad anyway

The dark engine wouldn't really suit DX. Some features arent as customiseable as in the Unreal engine (AI). Dark engine is much more suited to Thief and Shock2.

SS1 should be thanked for more things in Deus Ex than SS2. Deus Ex and SS2 were in development concurrently more or less. I think Deus Ex's inventory system was inspired by Diablo's.
The Augmentation system is similar in some ways to SS1's hardware upgrades.

That's a bit of a stretch; the hardware upgrades in SS1 didn't require any sort of decision-making. SS2's "pick any four" system is closer to that of DX.
EDIT: SS1, SS2, whatever.

Yeah, that's what I meant by "some", but I should have been clearer. The choice element is of course the key difference. However, the Hardware upgrades in SS1 did draw from a central energy store, could be replenished at once at a special machine, had several levels of effectiveness and included enhancements that added player actions/tools related primarily to vision and movement.
I'd say it provided the initial inspiration, but Deus Ex added enough that the effect on the game is mostly different.
