I can't get past the first lvl, MEH! I keep trying to play like ut....how do you other people play, and I can't decide my skills at the beginning...
Xaximus on 27/7/2004 at 19:08
There are a variety of ways to play really, but I always start the game by boosting my pistol skill (as well as computers and/or lockpicking), and being stealthy, and very careful with well-placed shots to the head in order to minimize injury and ammo usage. You can also use a crossbow, and stun prod if pistol ammo or darts get low.
Trying to play guns-blazing ala UT will probably result in a quick death, and will expend your ammo very quickly (you won't find huge caches of ammo as you might in typical FPSes). You're augmented, but you're not Superman, so be cautious and tactical.

Thats somethign I'm not good at...better try it anyway. *twiches to jump everywere and blow everyone up with a redeemer*

Yeah, it's a change of pace from what you might be used to, but give it a shot. As you progress, you'll find weapons that will give you better opportunity to go guns-blazing somewhat, but until then, you'll just have to suffer ;). You're playing a government agent, not a reckless gung-ho commando, after all (though you'd think you'd be supplied with a better supply of ammo).
Let me know how it goes.

It is hard for the average FPS in 1st level of DX1 because the player starts out weak. The prime factor here is weapon accuracy: most FPSs offer perfect weapon accuracy. It didn't help that the player has limited weapon selection and/or limited ammo right at the start.
Lvl 1 requires a lot of patience because you really can't go guns-blazing; you get killed or run outta ammo fast.
You have to take it slow and steady:
1) Get the jump on people. Learn to sneak and hide, and make your first shot counts.
2) Stand still and wait for your crosshairs to tighten up before shooting; don't run around and ruin your accuracy. It is tempting to run around to dodge shots aimed at you in a firefight, but in my experience, I normally stay still in a crouch (reduce target profile?) and wait for them to close in while my crosshairs tighten up enough to shoot with reasonable accuracy.
3) If you played Thief and/or FPSneakers extensively, you can try sneaking up on unwary enemies and knock them out with a baton to the small of your back. The chances of knockout are rather chancy though; you might want to use the riot prod instead (limited ammo) because even if the first prod didn't knockout, at least the target is temporaily stunned and helpless (unless you miss totally), allowing you to prod him again.
4) Make use of the friendly security 'bots. If you don't mind the high body count, you can lure the NSFs to them and the 'bots will make short work of them for you.

Rolandor! Are you also part of the Singapore boards at GameFaqs.com?
Kailonn, like Rolandor mentioned, it's better to go through it silently and use stealth. A baton will always knock out your enemy. You just have to hit them in the right places. The mid-portion of their back works best for me. When indoors, make use of the computer terminals to turn the turrets on the enemy. Oh and remember to hide enemy bodies as the other enemy AI's will go beserk at the sight of a fallen comrade.

Navare will share dirty secrets with you! :cheeky: But Manderly and Carter will disown you... :(
Dario on 15/8/2004 at 20:41
If you stick with preservation-of-life morals, Carter will return to help you later in the game, at Vandenberg. ...I think that's how it goes. You don't always know what to do to please people in that game. Sometimes I do what I think gets Sandra to show up later in the game, and she doesn't show. :erg:
One thing about Deus Ex... the outcomes are not always very predictable. :erm: ...very unlike Invisible War:
"Help our side! Join our side! Do this for us! Do that for us! Now you're our ally. Now you're our enemy..."
