Meant to try today, but I got sidetracked. Ended up flying my 747 into an oil rig instead. Hilarity ensured.
I'll have to give the tank/firetruck and cargo plane combo a try tommorrow. I'll fit that between a couple meetings in the morning and Lost in the evening, maybe with some Splinter Cell: Conviction co-op too. Now THAT is some good fun. And again, it makes me sad that there's no multiplayer built into JC2.

After doing the power station faction mission I yomped about halfway into the mountainous region in the centre of the main island, then jumped off the cliff there and tranquilly rode the air currents the rest of the way across the mountains back to the west coast. :D
Also: using a dismounted minigun to shoot up half a seabase and the helicopter reinforcement then getting into the shore defence cannon and shooting up the rest of the base = heaven.

I'm out flying a jetfighter when suddenly there's a missile after me. Guess I flew over a military base. The plane doesn't have any countermeasures or anything like that and the missile seems to be catching up to me. Then I have an idea. I get out of the cockpit and jump up on top of the plane, face backwards, pull my submachinegun out, and shoot the missile out of the sky! :D
Haha holy shit I didn't think it'd actually work but it did. I love this game. :)

mild spoilers:
I flew one of those stealth jets all the way to the unmarked island in the northwest corner of the map, and as I got closer, the clouds darkened and I saw some giant towers in the fog. I flew even closer, and two of the towers charged up and blew my plane out of the sky, stranding me on the island, where I eventually was killed by guards. All of this, I assume, is part of some critical plot mission that I haven't reached yet. Still, it was a cool and unexpected surprise.

Aja:
Kind of, there is a mission there, but what you experienced is the island from Lost. The crashed plane, the hatch, a hot air balloon and the smoke monster noise, amongst other things are there. It happens whenever you fly a plane to the island and isn't (afaik) tied to the towers.
In many open-world games and especially JC1 I've had a tendency to just muck around and never get around to finishing the story, so I've been pushing myself to get to the end of this game and now, after 28 hours, I finally saw the end credits scrolling on my screen. And I must say that the final mission lives up to all the awesomeness that led up to it. :D
I'm still only at 31% completion of the whole game though, so after the story ends something called "Mercenary Mode" begins which basically lets you do all the missions you skipped the first time around.
