If the show passes the books, the show passes the books. The producers have said they know where the story is going, and we've seen they don't have any problems making their own detours that change the story anyway. I don't think the show passing the books will necessarily harm sales of the books coming out later either.

Great episode. I read the last twenty minutes took a whole month to film. I love the look in John Snow's face as they're pulling away from the dock. Pretty intense final scene there.
I've also read they're pretty much caught up to the books now. I guess if I had read the books first (I haven't), I'd be a bit concerned that whatever HBO comes up with will affect how the final two books are written, be it consciously or subconsciously. I dunno, I guess everyone involved must have known this was a possibility, but it still seems odd. Has a scenario like this happened before?

I don't think so. From what I've heard, there are a lot of characters in the books that have either been written out entirely. And of those that are in, a good bit of them have veered off in another direction. While they're both following roughly the same plot points, and are going to end in about the same place, the show and the books have kind of become their own things. They're almost like alternate versions of each other.

The book and movie 2001 were made at the same time on their own rough track over the same general story.

Yup, and the movie doesn't quite capture the majesty of the book's, 'My god -- it's full of stars!' But they're both great pieces of art on their own terms.

Can't believe it's already been 3 years since the end of season 2. I still haven't seen anything beyond that. I hear they go to a wedding in season 3 tho, that must be a nice change of pace from the usual unpleasantness! :)

It's definitely a counterpoint to all the other grimness. There's even musicians playing wedding songs, and a radiant, happily pregnant wife.

Quite the finale, still processing it all. They're literally in uncharted territory now, it'll be interesting to see where next season goes.
(never realized what an awesome bod Cersei has, yow).

Okay. My first reaction (to Jon Snow's death) was; OMG! ARE YOU FUCKING KIDDING ME?!!? Even though I know he was stabbed at the end of A Dance with Dragons, which I'd quite forgotten since it's been awhile since I read the books, you're left wondering if he lives or dies in the book. But this season finale clearly shows him dying. I am not happy with this latest development, though the realization that Melisandre is now at Castle Black makes me wonder if she's going to resurrect Jon.
One thing that did amaze me though, was that by the end of Cersei's 'walk of shame', I found myself actually feeling sorry for her. Go figure. Judging from the look on her face, I have a feeling heads are gonna roll. And soon.
Great finale, but I'm still upset about Jon Snow (I was none too keen about the killing off of Myrcella, either). It'd be great if Martin finished this last installment and published it before next season; I'd like to know what's coming.
