I'm going to just assume that B&W have him chained in a basement somewhere ...
Yeah, that is what I was expecting in 2012 too.
But we can't be further from the truth.
Once in a while I check GRRM's personal blog.
(
http://grrm.livejournal.com/)
What has GRRM been doing over the last years ?
He has bought a small movie theatre in his home town.
They show old movies. And new movies in the SF/Fantasy/Horror category.
They do book readings. Invite authors. They have special events.
And often GRRM is present.
He bought an old bowling alley. It's gonna be transformed into a young artist breeding place.
I think GRRM is only involved as an investor. But you can bet your arse he'll be around when there is anything interesting. Or any reason to party.
GRRM likes going to fan conventions. I think he goes to half a dozen every year. He enjoys meeting old buddies. And it seems he has hundreds if not thousands of close friends in the industry. I suspect he also enjoys being around his fans.
Invite GRRM for an interview. He will gladly come. Doesn't matter if it is in the US, Europe, or on the moon. He'll come.
Last 3 months he invested all of his time and energy in a yelling match on the Internet. I bet some of you have heard of "gamer gate". Well, the SF&Fantasy folks have their own version now. Puppy-gate. GRRM posted a dozen articles on his website discussing Puppygate. Each article almost the size of a full ASOIAF chapter. Well, ok, I'm exaggerating here. But he seems heavily affected by it.
GRRM like SF&F awards. Not only receiving them. But also he enjoys being involved in the selection and voting process. Puppygate is about how right-wing readers are trying to influence SF&F awards. To combat that, GRRM has said that he will try to read all books and all stories nominated in a bunch of categories for the Hugo Awards (and I think an other award too).
GRRM likes to make a few bucks on the side. So he helped Ran & Linda (2 of his oldest fans) to write the book "The World of Ice and Fire". Full with all kinds of historical and geographical stuff about the world of ASOIAF. Very interesting, maybe. But not as interesting as a 6th book would have been.
GRRM likes to be involved in the community of SF&F writers. So he edits and redacts books. Lots of books. E.g The Wild Cards series. He edited 3 of those since ADWD. But also other books. I think he's involved in at least one book with stories written by other writers per year. Often friends of his. No idea why he does that, there must be dozens of other people who can do the same.
GRRM likes those books with short stories by several writers. So he sometimes joins them and writes a short (50-150 pages) story. He's done 5 of those since ADWD.
For the first 3 seasons, GRRM wrote the script of one episode per season. He stopped doing that.
It fucking drives me nuts.
GRRM had the chance to write a master-piece.
And the TV-series would have made sure that this master-piece would have gotten a lot of exposure.
But the fact that the tv-series has overtaken the show is going to be the reason the whole thing is gonna be a lot less glorious than it could have been.
And if GRRM doesn't finish the last book, which is very possible, his whole legacy will be down the drain.
Check out this article, written a few months ago:

The writer thinks GRRM will complete the 6th book early 2017.
That would be just in time so that book 6 will be published before the broadcasting of season 7 (the last season).
Only the Seven can tell whether book 7 will ever be finished.
The first book was published in 1996.
Can you imagine reading the first book in 1996. And still be waiting how the story will end ?
