This topic dedicated to Frictional Games... - by lost_soul

Anybody know what these developers are up to? I've played both the Penumbra series and Amnesia and I'm interested to see what they will do next. Are they going to stick to making real horror games (instead of action games like RE has become), or will they branch out a bit?
Personally I hope they keep making scary games, though it would be nice to see a bit of human interaction in one of their games. Try for a more ambitious project. Also, we should get rid of the old rule where monsters can't go through (load zone) doors. Not sure how you make this work in terms of gameplay, but always being able to just go into another area to escape a monster is a bit too easy.

I'm pretty sure A Machine for Pigs was the sequel to The Wrong Trousers.

It isn't a beautiful name, but it is allegorically compelling - at least in my imagination.

Frictional aren't making the follow up to Amnesia. It's being made by the Dear Esther guys.
Anyway, the title makes me laugh largely because it sounds like something a shitty pop-industrial band would have used as a band name/album title circa 1995.

I'm sorry, but "The Dark Descent" is
far worse. At least "A Machine for Pigs" feels more poetic.
Yes...
terrible poetry. Or maybe Shel Silverstein poetic at best.

Yes well, that's besides the point, isn't it? It's at least an effort. "The Dark Descent" is just so... ordinary. And it's so unnecessary too -- just calling the game Amnesia would have been enough.

In addition to producing A Machine for Pigs (as far as I know they're pretty much hands-off on the design side, thechineseroom is taking care of all the development) Frictional Games are working on their next game.
I'm not following their forums so I don't know if there's anything substantial (probably not), but it's going to be a new franchise and not necessarily rooted in horror gerne.

"The Dark Descent" may seem trite, but I think it's about as perfect a title as you can give to an original homage to Lovecraft. It manages to describe the horror, the slide into insanity, and the physical journey in one concise phrase.
"A Machine For Pigs" makes me think the protaganist is going to be based on a young Trent Reznor or something.
