Yeah, Eastward looks more like a pixel action-jRPG than HLD's CGA-hued combat platforming. Clearly though the most stand-out thing about it is the beautiful pixel work and palettes.
RE: becoming an individual soldier in an RTS, you can do that in the Men of War games. It's not FPP, but the Direct Control function lets you play as any controllable unit from a TPP while the battle rages on. It's quite interesting as that sort of thing goes for an RTS.

Nintendo's remaking Xenoblade Chronicles in the much snazzier XC2 engine, along with restoring a bunch of cut content, and extra story scenes. Looks pretty much.
