I just spent eight hours on the game last night doing almost exclusively story quests and I don't think I'm anywhere close to the end. It didn't take me multiple tries to complete anything either. I can't imagine how that reviewer got to the end so fast.

Why is Brutal Legend $70 here? Looking through these flyers I've noticed that a lot of new xbox and playstation releases are suddenly asking for $70, which is ten more than they should be. Publishers' response to economic downturn is to increase their prices? I take it back--I'm not buying this until it goes on sale.
Welcome to my world. It's been 70 Euros since both these systems launched over here. Which is exactly why the only game I bought full-price was MGS4... and that only because I'm a fanboy.
Everything else will have to wait.

GAME's UK preorder is listed at £40, with the given RRP at £50. Seems pretty standard for console games, if I recall correctly.

Which is $80. Ugh. Not really relevant to people who are paid in pounds, but for visiting Americans it's just insane.

£40 = more like $64 last time I checked!

ok, so my misguided whining about the price aside, what are the general impressions so far? I suspected the gameplay might be a bit unsatisfying but I hoped the story and art and acting would make up for it. Reviews are somewhat mixed.

I've got a solid 8 hours of playtime in, and the stats page says I'm at around 45%. The production is top notch. The start menu cinematic alone is worth the price of admission FFS.
IMO the game plays a lot like Psychonauts with a healthy dose of Overlord thrown in for good measure. The storyline missions are fun and varied so far. I've also done a few side missions, which do seem limited in scope. The races rock, the endless ambushes and defenses not so much.
The game world is awesome and quite obviously crafted with great care and affection. Tons of mounts, varied enemies and unlock-ables, lots to explore for an action game.
I was expecting an amusing 'off the wall' romp, and BL has exceeded my expectations in every way. The soundtrack feels perfect IMO, even if I'm not big into metal.
Console GOTY contender, no doubt.

that's good to know, since I went and bought it anyway :D

Absolutely. The intro is really nothing short of brilliant. I challenge anyone to sit through that and not be instantly won over by this game.
I'm also not too into metal, but it's hard not to get totally giddy over this world of flaming, metal skulls of awesomness and hellfire, and the game manages not to take itself too seriously with lots of great humor. It helps that the characters are really likable, too, and I'm not a Jack Black fan.
Also, I'm seeing a lot of people on GameFAQs crying foul over the "six hour" claim, all saying they're well over that mark and still have ways to go. I'm sure it's not epic-length, though.
