As an aside, can I just say how much I hate the metal scene? Honestly, a wardrobe that is 90% black t-shirts went out of fashion when Megadeth broke up. You don't need to look like a stereotypical douchebag to enjoy metal. Metal is a diverse and creative genre that continues to choke on an obsession with poor fashion choices, poor attitudes and this bullshit notion that if it's not exactly like the stuff that came out in the 80s it sucks. Case in point would be the people who won't listen to any Iron Maiden made after 1989. I'm sorry, but while Maiden's 80s stuff is timeless, completely dismissing
Brave New World or
A Matter of Life and Death on the basis of them not sounding like
Number of the Beast is ignorant and dumb and you should feel bad if you do it. Worse than that are the obnoxious, domineering assholes who only listen to obscure, poorly produced garbage nobody ever heard of.
Speaking of poor production, there are only 5 bands that can get away with having shit production and all of them are Darkthrone. A lot of early black metal was ruined by the absolutely shit-terrible production values, and I'm really getting tired of black metal kids acting like getting a good producer is somehow selling out. People are still acting like that 10 years after black metal realized it needed to sound good if it wanted to survive and it's just fucking irritating now. But the only thing worse than poor production is overproduction. Let me tell you right the fuck now: the Loudness War is the most insidiously evil bullshit to happen to heavy music since grunge. This habit of making shit as loud as possible until the fucking medium (CDs) can't even handle all the highs and lows anymore is the Cancer that is Killing Rock n' Roll.
Seriously though, fuck the metal scene. I'm fucking sick of it. I love metal, but I cannot
stand 90% of its adherents. These are the retards who like to wave their fucking metal penis and talk about how fucking metal they are when the fact is that metal isn't about how loud or obnoxious you are, it's about bucking trends and breaking the "rules" that the fucking music scene seems to have established. Being metal isn't being some pretentious fuckwad who only listens to obscure 80s thrash, and it's not about how many peoples' legs you can break in a mosh pit. It's about not being like the dimwitted scene kid who's so busy being "edgy" and "original" he fails to notice he looks like every other dipshit. When you can say "FUCK YOU" and go off and do what you want without having to worry about what the asshole in corpsepaint thinks of it, that's the most metal fucking thing of all.
Dude, you make great points and all, but mentioning Iron Maiden in a positive fashion kind of undermines your credibility. Iron Maiden have like 3 decent songs and they got worse over the years. Obviously, there's good metal done after the 80s, but mostly it was never by bands which were good in 80s.

Go listen to A Matter of Life and Death and come back and say that.
Pidesco on 29/5/2009 at 22:55
Just because A Matter of Life and Death isn't completely atrocious like, say, Virtual XI, it's still a fairly poor album.

Man, what? So what's your idea of a good album?
Pidesco on 29/5/2009 at 23:44
If you mean my idea of a good metal album, then Reign in Blood, Tales of a Thousand Lakes, Left Hand Path, Cowboys From Hell or Master of Puppets would be good examples.
Speaking more generally Kind of Blue, Bitches Brew, A Love Supreme, Double Nickels on the Dime, Revolver, Electric Ladyland, Led Zeppelin IV, Rated R, La Llorona, Surfer Rosa, Every Good Boy Deserves Fudge or Future Days are awesome examples.

You like Panterrible but not Iron Maiden?
I don't know what to say to that.

Good job on squeaking Mudhoney in there, but they are really not 'metal'.

It might not have been clear in my post, but the second list of albums is obviously not metal.

My bad, but some people I know actually consider most of those 'metal'.
