It'd be stupid to change engines for CoD since that would mean losing the trademark way that weapons handle, ballistics register, etc in the CoD. It wouldn't be CoD any more and they'd lose thousands of sales, this is no exaggeration.

Consider the death threats they got when they did some tweaks to Black Ops 2.
On the one hand, the CoD fanbase is a bit ridiculous in how much they scrutinize the game, but on the other hand, every engine can be tweaked and modified. I'm sure you could make Source feel like CoD or Battlefield with the right changes. The reason most games tend to feel like their predecessors with the same engine is more that if it isn't broken, they don't fix it- why get a new engine and make it behave like the old when you can just bolt on a few updates instead?

The real test of whether or not the CoD engine should be taken out back and shot will be the next Treyarch game. They are a solid studio with a clear vision of what they want to do, story and design wise. Not-Infinity Ward's tend to be soulless efforts with a design focus on ticking boxes.
What's the most inspired part of Ghosts? Probably Extinction Mode and that was made by Neversoft, rather than Not-IW.
Treyarch's technology director Cesar "pcdev" Stastny knows what he's doing and demonstrates this by properly catering to specific platforms strengths and their audiences' expectations - you just need to look at the PC version of Black Ops II for your proof.
Not-IW's technical ability? What look at how Ghosts is unoptimised dreck across 8th gen consoles and PC.

Well this seems to be the most recent thread that exists on the game (or perhaps even the only thread), though there's only a few posts. Figured it's best to ask here rather than make a new thread...
Basically, I'm debating whether or not to try Titanfall (PC) out and I'm looking for guidance. I've heard the campaign story is minimal at best but purely from a standpoint of what's in it - big-ass robots and jet pack-toting pilots duking it out - it does sound good. I've been reading up a little bit on the weapons and other abilities that are in there and yeah, I'm interested. I've always preferred a bit of sci-fi in my shooters and it all sounds like the sort of thing that would be right up my alley.
But it's online multiplayer only, and that's where I hesitate. I've never been a multiplayer person, and the few 1v1 deathmatches I had with my sister's old boyfriend many years ago on games like Quake 2, Unreal and Sin tells me that I actually quite suck at that sort of thing. So these days I always stick to single player games. I can certainly enjoy multiplayer-based games like Unreal Tournament or Quake 3 but again I only really have those because they have offline modes.
If Titanfall had an offline single player mode, it probably would've been a no-brainer essential purchase for me. I'm also a sucker for the idea of piloting huge robots (comes from growing up watching Power Rangers, I guess.) Shogo was a fun game but I never really felt that sense of "Holy crap, I'm piloting a feckin' huge mech!" Titanfall seems like it would convey that better but I really can't put into words just how much the multiplayer-only thing makes me apprehensive. It's totally out of my comfort zone.
So here's where I need the advice. Is Titanfall worth me taking a risk on? I guess I'm not really asking whether it's a good game or not, but rather whether an "only-single-player-because-I'm-a-crap-deathmatcher" person like myself can find something to enjoy and not get royally owned at every turn.
Thoughts? Opinions? Musings, even? Please send them my way.

If the ad campaigns are anything to go by, literally the only aspect of note to this game is that it has big robots. Interesting characters? Plot? Setting? Gameplay? Pfft, WE GOT ROBOTS!

I've read/heard that there are some interesting mechanics, like wall running and hooking and so on.

Why not just try it? It's free for 48 hours this weekend (48 hours from the time you install it).

Titanfall is a 100% MP game. There is a "campaign" but that's MP too. (I use the quotes deliberately, the story is basically a radioplay between NPCs that drones on while you play a very specific playlist of MP matches that alternate between team deathmatch and domination - which is your standard team-based point control mode.)
There isn't even the option for bot matches like UT and Q3. If you can't fill a MP lobby then you aren't going to play, simple as that.

Thanks for the replies guys. I was certainly aware that the campaign is multiplayer only, and again I wasn't really asking if the story itself is "good" or "interesting", but more how a guy whose who only used to single player games and being able to do things more or less at my own pace will be able to cope with the MP-only nature. You'd figure the developer must be aware that they're excluding potentially quite a large number of people by going down that route. If they would hope to entice people like myself it's got to be accessible and fair for all. A game consisting of me joined by dozens of other people who all just blaze ahead and leave me behind because I don't know what the hell I'm doing ain't going to be a whole lot of fun, frankly.
Thank you very much for the heads-up on the 48-hour free trial though, Jason. I wasn't aware of it until your post but it sounds like that could be a good way to test the waters - how's that for timing! I've gone ahead and downloaded/installed it ready, though I wouldn't want to actually start it until I'm finished with Rage first. Nothing to lose by giving it a try, I guess.
Eva raises another worry which I already had in the back of my mind but always worth being reminded of. Quake is only a couple of years off its 20th anniversary now but there's nothing to stop me enjoying it all over again tomorrow if I wanted to. On the other hand, for all I know Titanfall could be the most amazing game I'll ever experience but if nobody else is still playing that 20 years from now, it does become effectively worthless in the long run.

Played it, liked it....didn't buy it.
Reason why? It's pretty good at what it does, and the high level of player mobility makes it considerably more entertaining than CoD's online mode. It's also considerably more skill-intensive than COD ever was. The problem is that I don't see it having any longevity. I wouldn't want to play it for more than a week or two.

I think you've just accurately described all the potential cons of any multiplayer game...
