So AvP classic 2000 is on Steam for $5. I've never played an AvP game (actually, I played the first 50 feet of an alien level in a demo once), but I've heard they're great. For $5 this seems totally worth it but it's a case of me trying to stop impulse-buying things on Steam because they're cheap.
Considering I tend to like FPSs, but don't like them to feel dumb (though I did like Halo... should that have felt bumb to me? :P) would you recommend AvP to me?

AvP1 is very old school, it's not inspired by Half-Life at all. So whilst it is very atmospheric, the gameplay essentially has you wandering around large maze-like levels killing everything Doom style.

With a twist for the Alien levels. There will be times where you're surprised that you weren't on the floor...
But one of the best FPS games ever IMO.

You haven't played it, you were very, very drunk or you're an idiot.

Totally worth it - I'd definitely have bought it myself on steam if I didn't already have a disc version.
It's insanely tense (something a tad lost by the sequel), has limited saves to up the difficulty, has well-designed claustrophobic levels, great music, and while the gameplay can be boiled down to "go here, find switch, kill monsters, find door that switch opened", it's Doom-style gameplay refined and innovated into something that feels very, very different.
It also has Goldeneye-style unlockable cheats, which is always a fun challenge, and some that you unlock are hilarious, like a cheat that allows the alien headbite attack to be performed at any range.

Don't.
The tension level is created largely through making it fucking impossible to see anything. You can get the same experience by playing any other FPS with the brightness on your monitor turned way, way down. What tension it does have is entirely subverted by having a crack/caffeine hyperspeed pacing, Multiplayer balance is laughable, and the level design is flat out mean spirited.
Just wait for AvP3.

Phatose said it better than I ever could've.

While a great game when it came out, it certainly hasn't aged well.

Why don't you give a demo another try to see if you like the game? I don't know if the demo represents the game well, but it certanly better than listening to bunch of people who have different opininons.
Personaly I like the game, it was very atmospheric and hard, and the fact that you can play with 3 races was great. It wasn't a smart shooter, the story is weak (if there is a story, can't remember well), but it had a horror feeling to it, especially playing as a marine.

There are/were 3 demos, one for each race, which got the gameplay and atmosphere fairly nicely. The demos are set in the same level (Marine campaign level, Alien and Predator bonus level).

Only the Marine story gets much of an explanation, via comm terminals scattered around the levels. The Alien is just trying to get some munchies and the Predator is looking for trophies.
One thing the game did very well was the breakable lights, which did affect Civilian and Marine AI. Some levels had breakable generators as well, which if broken would turn off all lights and sentry guns until backup power was restored.
