Formerly titled: "To all taffers who have ORIGINAL copies of TDP/Gold and TMA..."
This post has been edited
further to reflect pertinent changes: I'd been looking for the hidden behind-the-scenes, goofy "pizza" and "I shot the sheriff" *.wav's forever.
Emerald Wolf and
bob_doe_nz clued me in in the posts below. Thanks guys!
------
This WAS for the taffers who would know what I'm talking about, and who were willing to take the time to solve the mystery, 'cause
apparently the names I mentioned below were merely non-canon fanfiction and have been accepted as canon by hundreds. Thanks to all who helped.
------
So now, the question has been answered. I'd asked this before, but I don't think too many people read the post: What are the FILENAMES of the *.str's and/or *.wav's that mention a "
Barak" and a "
Lord Janco"?
I first spotted Janco and Barak here: (
http://www.thief-thecircle.com/guides/lexicon/) http://www.thief-thecircle.com/guides/lexicon/
I still wonder why were they included?
The truth is, they never were released as part of any of the Thief games, demos included. For all the people, including myself, who used that list, and copied that list, and shared that list: It contains many errors. Enjoy it as a Thief-based fanfic, by all means, especially those of you who've created character profiles for RPG's, etc. But it's not canon. It was very helpful when I didn't have my own copies of the games. It was one of the very first lists of its kind and has its place in our history.
No Barak, Janco, or Tenel.
"Tenel" is a corruption of St. Jenel. After extensive investigation, all roads lead to the Novice Keeper's Lexicon. It's a stretch, but I wonder if Lord Janco came from "Dranko", another bit of confabulation. It is a stretch, but he doesn't exist outside the Lexicon and the numerous online copies of it. Another theory about Barak: Barak is found solely in the writings of Sneaksie Thiefsie in the context of Thief, so I'm wondering if that had a direct influence on the Lexicon.
"Larris the Magpie" wrote "The Keeper's Log", re-titled as "A Novice Keeper's Lexicon" by Digital Nightfall, and posted on TheCircle October 4, 1999. "Larris the Magpie" is more commonly known on the web as "Larris Magpie". It contains other bits of non-canon fanfic, such as:
"
Apparitions: Spirits of the Trickster thought to take the form of dead Hammerite priests."
Since no evidence can be found for Barak and Lord Janco, they will not be included in the Encyclopædia of the Thief Universe.
However, (http://www.ttlg.com/forums/showthread.php?p=1688013#post1688013) The Magpie himself has returned to the TTLG nest! We shall see where this leads us....

is this in TMA or TDP? cause I'm willing to do some searches. after all, the only way to find this stuff is by simply playing all the files. I only TMA though...
oh... and it's nice to be back in TTLG after so much time :)

Both names come from the
Novice Keeper's Lexicon for
Dark Project:
(
http://www.thief-thecircle.com/guides/lexicon/) http://www.thief-thecircle.com/guides/lexicon/
BARAK: Historically speaking, if you look up the real life Constantine you will find a real life Barak. If there really is no Barak in the Thief games, I wonder if he was created for an FM by someone who knew the two names were associated? Otherwise, I'm thinking he would be in
Dark Project or
Gold.
LORD JANCO: Since this name is on that list, I can only assume he was mentioned in the game, unless---again--he's only in an FM.
I raise the possibility of an FM because a few of those lists include non-canon information. It wouldn't be the first time this happened.
I used these scattered lists from around the web as my sources until I got my own copies of the games to work from.
Now, Xenith...I believe the *.wav of the guards joking around is from TMA. I don't know if it would be found in the guard folders or somewhere else, but the guard folders would be a start.
Welcome back!
Thanks.

well I've taken all the wavs that could have been relevant and ran them again and again listening for the two names. I haven't found any mention of Barak or Lord Janco. :(
now I only have TMA so I can't help you out whit TDP and Gold.
hopefully someone else can take a look at the other two thief games.:erm:

Nonetheless, I thank you for your time and effort, Xenith!:thumb:
Basically, if those two names are unaccounted for, they will be rejected from the Names List and forgotten.
That *.wav, does exist somewhere other than my memory, dangit!:nono:

You're probably having trouble finding them because they're in the snd.crf of the T2 Alpha Demo, Namely:
Guard2\English and Guard3\English.
The conversation between the guard and the hammerite in Angelwatch also didn't make it into the full game (Guard1\sg4C0302-04 and Hammer2\me1c0301-05). And of course the argument with the archers sounds different as well.

Emerald Wolf, you make me smile.
Thankee. I'm sure jtr7 thanks you as well.

GEEZ! I never would have thought it was in a demo, or a specific demo, 'cause my friend's game was the fullly-patched version that came with the soundcard to show off the EAX stuff!
Thanks Emerald Wolf!
And, uh, I had no idea about a the Angelwatch conversation, either. BONUS!:thumb:
I may have to ask for the filenames if I run into problems. I've downloaded demos for TDP/Gold and TMA, but I need to see if I have the specific version (1.01, right?).
I'll be back, either way....
(Attempts high-five with Sola and misses, 'cause...well, he's not even in the room. Uh. Um. Struggling to physically contain my geeky enthusiasm as I'm sitting in a library.):o
