All right. I'm back. I've got the right demo. I found the ones that Emerald Wolf gave the filenames for. Whoohoo! I hadn't looked for the "I shot the sheriff" wave, until I saw this other thread that coincidentally (hmmm...) popped up today, as well:

How'd this happen, bob_doe_nz? Thanks!

I found that a few years back, and I think I read somewhere about it...
Though I cannot find it and cannot thank the original poster.

So... it IS a wonderful coincidence that you started that thread? 'Cause that would be like...cosmic, man!

Yes, it was a co-inky-dink:thumb:

It's DENSITY! [sic]
(Insert commentary on universal unconsciousness, here.)
So, would this qualify as an easter egg? Or is there a more accurate term? (Insert joke, here.)
But seriously.

It probably depends on whether the Devs intended it to be there when they shipped the demo or if they simply forgot about it.
Of course credit goes to Saracoth for first discovering it:

I wrote a search routine, and there is no mention of Barak or Lord Janco in any string files for either Thief Gold or Thief The Metal age. I couldn't find my original Dark Project CD, but once i do i'll run it through the search routine just to be sure. I doubt it'll turn up anything though. Maybe they too are only mentioned in the demo? There's no way i'm going to listen to all the wavs though ;)

Thanks for the the historical footnot, Emerald Wolf. It's true. And Saracoth did discover it before I first played the game or even knew about TTLG!
And hey, Duncan, thanks for giving it a shot. At one point I had all the Dark Project demos, and one Metal Age demo on my hard drive, along with Thief Gold, Metal Age, and Deadly Shadows. After letting the search engine complete indexing my drive, I ran a search and the Novice Keeper's Lexicon was the only result.
I now have GoogleDesktop and the results have been the same when I've repeated the search. That's why I wonder if the names may have come from an early FM.
If we knew the general source, I'd do all the digging. The final step might be for me to use deadman's database to see which files aren't listed and go through them.

Okay, I understand about the unused sound files in unwelcome guest but what is all this about lord janco and barak? What are you asking, and where did you get these names from?
jtr7 on 29/6/2007 at 20:51
Are you taffin' with me Dan Knott? I mentioned where before, but I'll state it again. The names are listed here:
(
http://www.thief-thecircle.com/guides/lexicon/) http://www.thief-thecircle.com/guides/lexicon/
The
Novice Keeper's Lexicon goes way back, and is one of the first attempts to list out and define the elements that make up the Thief universe. Until I was able to purchase my own copies of the games, I used the NKL, along with many other incomplete compilations, to make my own list. The project has grown, since then, and I find that there are mysterious bits of information in these old(er) lists. Since the NKL is posted as part of Thief-TheCircle, I'm believing those two names weren't just made up and stuck in there.
I'm wondering where they came from, and there are people who will swear they read a note in-game about Barak. Less is known about a Lord Janco.
In a list someone made for TDS there is a "Jackweed." I've yet to find the source of this one, but I'm not worried about it, yet. It's still fairly fresh, as opposed to the NKL.
As of yet, I find no hard evidence they are part of Thief canon.
I'm hoping to settle this once and for all--for posterity's sake.:D
