Unless a similar method of directing (http://www.ttlg.com/forums/showthread.php?p=216082#post216082) a scripted conversation between the player and an AI involved the flesh slugs in Ultima Underworld, I wouldn't think so. Just another case of developer humor, I guess. ;)

There are a lot of jokes in the OMs, but I wondered if there might be more to it. One that's more obvious is an object numbered "666" and labeled "Satan". Other than the fact that it's in the Maw, there really isn't any more to it than that. It's an earth crystal.

The explanation in the link does explain some of the things I'd found regarding that sequence.
