I...
I... did. I broke down. It's...
Yeah, make fun. I'm not afraid to admit I felt raw-eyed and forlorn at the end of
Requiem for a Dream. But this isn't that, and that isn't this.
And as much as I'd like to explain, I can't, you see. It's best that way. RPS covered it enough, and if you were interested, you'd have gone and gotten it by now.
It's true. I shed tears. It's not what I wanted to do, but...
...
Fuck. I'd give you a clinical, literal analysis of it, but there's plenty out there. And you shouldn't read any of them. Just go to the damn (
http://freebirdgames.com/to_the_moon/) site and play the version that gives you an hour. Buy it if that hour intrigues you.
Screw the game debate, and the art debate, and the debate over whether it's the best story written for a game. I'd ask you to simply listen to the music, and understand that it's one of the most delicate, and
human stories told this way.

Yes. I admit it. Now go on. Make fun.

For those of you who have no interest in deciphering Sulphur's usual impenetrable self-indulgent glurge, (
http://freebirdgames.com/to_the_moon/) this is what he's referring to.

Is that the iPad game about being on the deathbed that was trailered a little while ago? Or another indie game where the makers have like, the best story ever, and figure they can distract the audience from their lack of writing skill with enough platform jumping inbetween?
Sulphur on 15/11/2011 at 09:39
I don't think there's an iPad version of it.
And it's another indie game with good writing skills deployed within, and no platforming or, indeed, much actual gameplay whatsoever. You can tell I bought it near instantaneously.
Also, it's not all gloom and rainstorms despite the serious subject matter. It's contrast and complementary effect, techniques which are effective if done right -- so shaddup and play the demo before you make any snap judgements

Hmmm watching the ingame trailer. I know small studios, limited budgets and scales but, somehow, I am having a really hard time taking this game seriously with all the JRPG, 3 frames of animation awkward cutscenes. Which would be fine for a JRPG game, but this is actually trying to be serious and moving, so the chosen framework kind of kills the mood. I donno, downloading the 1hr thing, will see...

I'm pretty much of the opinion that if a story is good enough and is told well, it transcends the format through which it's presented.
For example, FFVI & Chrono Trigger were way more than the sum of their humble parts and were more moving than the majority of films I've watched lately.
