Ace Combat has always had great gameplay. But Ace Combat 04 also had a great story, told in a very original manner. Ace Combat 5's wasn't bad but tried to bite off a bit more than it could chew. Ace Combat 0 and Ace Combat 6 got progressively worse, with the latter having some of the worse writing I have ever seen in a video game (and that's saying something). And the gameplay stopped advancing...AC6 was fun, sure, but it was just AC5 with prettier smoke trails.
Hopefully HAWX will be fun, though Tom Clancy storylines tend to bother the hell out of me; not just the politics, but the fact that they are so damn (

I'd play the demo, except my college seems to block Xbox Live. Jackasses.

Maaaan, Hunt for Red October was excellent and you can't convince me otherwise.

You say Raven Shield is weak? That's pity, I actually thought I give it a chance and buy it as budget edition.
For sure I'm going to try Advanced Warfighter in foreseenable future.
Raven Shield/Athena Sword are certainly NOT weak. Especially for a fan of this sort of thing. If you liked SWAT 3/4 this is right up your alley. The multiplayer is the strong point, and there are tons of mods and plenty of people playing online at any given time.
Hell, I have all of the Xbox Rainbow games. Even the last 2 shitty ones (Lockdown and the Xbox exclusive Critical Hour :eww:). I though R63 and Black Arrow were ACE, even on the Xbox. THe PC and Xbox versions are some of my favorite shooters.
Also: Ace Combat 4 is probably the best console flight game I have ever played.

I think he was talking about R6-3 which is the console version of Raven Shield, and is a somewhat different game, AFAIK. I think the PC Raven Shield is pretty good, though it has the usual Red Storm AI (capable of shooting you in head with a desert eagle from 100 yards). :)
GRAW1-2 are great IMO, only problem is that the missions are mostly linear, it has little replayability (no fan missions either) and that the AI can be really stupid sometimes (though it rarely happened with me).
EDIT:

Stupid teammate AI is a chronic disease of these games and you would expect it's an important area, to which the devs should dedicate considerable attention. Tragedy... However if the GRAW2 is essentially based on the same AI scripts as the previous title, isn't it a bit surprising?
The AI in GRAW1 was relatively autonomous and took care of themselves most of the time. It was a bit hard to control them because of this, since often they thought they knew better what to do. People complained about this, so the AI has been toned down for GRAW2 significantly, meaning that you essentially have to babysit them the whole time, and they also get themselves killed more easily. I liked the first one better, but got used to the second one after a while.

For me Rogue Spear was the best of the Rainbow six games. Setting up entry points and the path the AI fire teams would follow, go codes etc, all made for a great experience.

I'm sorry, but all of that pre-mission planning ruined those games for me. Too far away from what I was looking for in a game. At least R63 made them optional.

I always enjoyed the pre-mission planning more than the actual gameplay.

Really? Well, I figured it must have been a big part of the attraction to the game, as it was impossible to simply overlook it. I just am not a big 'strategy game guy'.

Often I played missions in observer mode, trying to create the perfect plan where the AI could complete the mission without me. :) That was fun. For me, the planning was the meat of the game.

Just grabbed and played the demo on the 360 and yep, it's fun! Certainly nothing resembling a sim, or at least not on the 'normal' difficulty level and 'normal' control set.
Lots of ducking a diving, lots of flying close to the ground (though that was not necessary, I found it fun) and lots of shooting and blowing stuff up. Great fun!
