tl;dr version: if you're not using DDS, there is no reason to use any format other than PNG, and you may as well use 24bit PNG rather than indexed, unless your image has less than 256 distinct colours.

[edit]And I completely forgot to comment on the actual things. They look good! although I'd suggest adding small raised bits to place the hammer and cog mace on, they look too... sudden right now[/edit]
