Let me tell you something about hearing loss.
It makes watching movies without subtitles not a lot of fun. Especially since the sound is way, way up and everything is booming and it's hard to follow.

They don't have subtitles at your cinemas? A lot of ours have subtitling facilities and audio description facilities for people with visual problems.

Aren't theaters with captioning and special equipment for the deaf more common now? I thought I read somewhere that most large theater complexes usually have at least one captioned theater.

If there's one anywhere in this ashtray, I haven't found it. The last time I asked for accommodations (which I hate doing for a variety of reasons) they brought out this ancient headphone/receiver set that looked like it was new in 1995 and didn't even work. Subtitled shows are usually special events for kiddie movies. So I don't bother anymore.

Movies I watched last year (still feels weird referring to 2012 as last year):
American Reunion - After how bad American Pie 3 was I was completely expecting to hate it. Turned out to be the best AP in ages. Loved it.
Cabin In The Woods - From the trailer I completely expected this one to be a generic "bunch of people in a cabin in the woods" style horror flick. Which it was far from. Surprisingly good movie.
Seeking a Friend For The End of The World - Odd but enjoyable. Steve Carrell and Kiera Knightley have a good chemistry. Surprising. Was surprised that Seth off the OC was in it also. Unique sort of movie.
TED - Very funny movie. Loved it.
The Avengers - Quite good. Nothing ultra unexpected.
The Bay - Since I quite like camera feed style horror flicks I quite liked it. Enjoyable.
The Dark Knight Rises - Doesn't hold a candle to the 2nd movie but it was alright. Not one I'd rewatch in a hurry.
The Expendibles 2 - 80s style action overload. Awesome movie.

What amazes me is that you have the time to go see these movies. Personally I avoid going to the theater -- hate theaters, and for the rare movie I do want to see I can never make the time for -- and I can't get anyone else to go with me.
I don't see all of these in the cinema, a fair few of them are downloads.
As is pretty damn obvious, I love cinema. I love feeling like a kid again when the lights drop and the movie starts. Like Brethren says, it feels like an event, and for many movies the big screen play makes a world of difference.
But it took having 2 kids for me to get used to going to the cinema myself. I wasn't comfortable with the idea (eating alone on the rare occasion still bugs me when travelling with work) but after a couple of times I realised it's absolutely fine.
Going to see Gangster Squad tonight (with the wife this time)! :cheeky:

3 of mine were from downloads (cabin, seeking a friend and the bay). Seeking and the bay never came out over here (in Australia) for some odd reason. Personally I far prefer the cinema experience to sitting at home. Though at home you don't get the annoying people common in cinemas atleast.

Glad I'm not the only one who hates eating at a restaurant alone. I remember when I used to do systems testing and I was sent to the Isle of Man (half expected Christopher Lee to burn me in a giant effigy) for a week and was excited about my expenses budget for food. Ate out the first night and have never eaten alone at a restaurant since. Depressing experience.

Heh, eating alone is alright if it's in a diner or pizza joint or something and you can sit and read the paper or sit next to the window and look out. But if it's a fancy place and you're sitting in the middle by yourself with nothing to look at but the people around you I imagine it can be pretty awkward.

Yeah, I can do a café or something with a book or even just phone browsing, but proper restaurants? I feel like I've been stood up.
