Grundbegriff: I think you may be right about castle Clinton's entrance.
When I've enterred by the back entrance and left by the main entrance, I get responses like I've gone on a killing spree even when I made a point of not letting off a single shot.
But, it's only when I enter and leave via the back entrance that I ever see the game acting like Denton took a more subdued approach.
CheesyPoof: the best weapon I've found for greasels and karkians is the flame thrower. Watching the little buggers run about in circles at around five times their normal speed and setting everything near them on fire is a sight I never tire of

One more on Castle Clinton: Grundbegriff is probably right. I've played through Deus Ex several times now and the outcome seems terribly random. In one instance I had to listen to Anna's "You were too gentle..." speech after fufilling the objective, went back in to blow up the door to the office with a TNT crate from the subway (I'm obsessive about saving ammo and usually don't bother upgrading lockpicking, there's nearly always another way into the room) and then had Sam Carter chew me out because I went in shooting. Seemed a bit unfair. So the last time through I decided to mess around with the legends menu. The flag the game sets for this point is a boolean called "BatteryParkSlaughter" (or something very close). Now, in contrast to e.g. "HasKilledStatueTerrorist" (or whatever it's called) this flag is only set if the game thinks you have slaughtered everyone, instead of being set to "false" if you haven't. Could have been handled better, I must agree. Next time through I'm gonna kill every terrorist in Battery Park, not enter through the front door and see what the game thinks of that.
Paul's reaction to the first mission on Liberty Island is a lot more subtley managed. I think you're allowed something like four or five kills before he tells you "You killed a lot of people tonight".
P.S. To get back to the topic of the thread. I do agree with most of the issues raised in this thread, with only a few exceptions: I never found the game too dark, but that might just be my setup (lucky me

http://www.ttlg.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif). And one thing I'm extremely concerned as far as the next engine is concerned is portability. I've got a PowerMac at home and from what I've read the Thief etc. engines would be a royal pain to port - the unreal engine(s) are already ported (thank you, Westlake) and work really nicely on my machine (rather low end even two years ago, when I bought it).
P.P.S. Azal - how did you get up the roof? - I presume you mean the top of the wall -I always had to built a very elaborate ladder out of crates. Please tell me there's an easier way up there.
Sorry, this post has turned out longer than intended. Cheers,
Bogey

http://www.ttlg.com/forums/ubb/wink.gifTry a Tranq Dart, one will make them run away and two will put them out. (At any skill level I think.)
CheesyPoof on 13/9/2000 at 17:44
I will try the tranq dart on greasels with my current guy. No room for the flame thrower (though it is my most fav. weapon) this time around. I just escaped from the MJ12 detention center and it took something like 4-5 buck shot shells at close range to put one down.

I was playing through the Hong Kong mission and watching the Newstand lady and that little Louis Pan Brat Pan stole a hundred credits and the only response was a half-assed "Hey give that back" no chase or anything, and then Pan just calmly walked away. I think that a new submission should have started there where the Newsstand person chases him and Pan runs through the canal district and everywhere and if you catch him, it may annoy Gordon Quick a little, but then it would get you a fvor from the Newstand person. Repayable perhaps in some sort of exclsuive information, or perhaps the location of some new equiptment not available otherwise.
Also a large MJ12 raid in the French nightclub with Nicolette and more MJ12 participants in the raid on the Lucky Money.
Thats it for now
CheesyPoof on 13/9/2000 at 20:34
I just thought of this, but after that punk steals the credits, can you knock out/kill him and then take the credits for yourself? Hhhhmmm, something to try as I am at the helipad in Hong Kong this time around, I never like that kid anyway.

I had a few beefs with the audio. Problems with walking on grass and having the metalic step sound. This can be readily solved by kidnapping the audio guys from the System Shock 2 team. (The sound effects in that game freaked me out beyond beleif.)
I didn't have a problem with the ultra-black setting in the game, but it could have used some daytime scenes (I can only remember night)
<entering ultra-picky mode>
Some of the voice acting didn't seem to fit the context of the conversation in some situations.
What was with the female by the gas station. It seems that she and JC have some sort of history when they have their brief conversation and then nothing. What's the deal with that?
CheesyPoof on 14/9/2000 at 03:37
Yea, there is a history. I saved her from that pimp the first time in hells kitchen and saved her and her pop from Jojo the time I was supposed to be visiting my sick brother (damn kill switchs). I think the bitch owes me, but her attitude! I should have let the pimp kill her.

I might be pointing out something you already know but, if you give Sandra's dad your pistol when Jojo turns up, she decides to stay at the hotel instead of running.

You know you play too much Deus Ex when you're registered on two different forums.

Thief remains unequalled in the dramatic and gameplay-relevant use of sound.
