I personally like SWTIV: TSTCHKVSYNDCT.

Protip: It's not just about acronyms.

Well, D:OS is not quite BG2, it's a lot more whimsical, but it's reasonably close. From what I can tell (I'm only 12 hours in), W2 seems to have the same problem -- it's closer to FO2 than to FO1, a bit on the side of cartoonish/outlandish.
Now, with POE release date announcement coming any day now, just need someone to make a proper SS3 and VTMB2 and this would be a perfect renaissance.
Oh, and enjoy:

IDKWTFEITA :(

...EITA? I think I need a clue to get that one.
On a different note: I'm very much looking forward to this one. I was looking forward to Divinity: Original Sin, and it's a nice enough game, but it doesn't scratch my specific RPG itch, which is mainly about game world, characters and writing. I love Planescape Torment, and this one looks like it'll have a very similar feel to it.

If I tell you then it spoils the fun[/loose definition]. (A forum I used to visit had a whole thread of people conversing in abbreviations and surprising each other at how easy it is to hold a conversation like that, but only if you have a reasonably good idea of what people are likely to respond with.)
So, is this game part of some resurgence of late 90s/early 2000s top-down RPGs? I've been noticing them more lately with Wasteland 2 and Divinity. Just asking because when I think about all of the RPGs I've played it adds up to quite a lot, but I've never felt like a fan of the genre - more of a casual observer who tries something out when it gets popular - and it's like there's been a decade where I forgot they even existed.

Yeah, Kickstarter's proving to be a godsend for old(ish)-school RPG fans. The genre might lend itself to crowdfunding, in that you tend to get a very devout fanbase (although it's also one that's likely to chew your face off in case of, say, Fallout 3), and while they expect lots of content, by and large they're perfectly okay with relatively simple graphics (compared to the eyecandy AAA games) and often prefer written text over voice acting, which I imagine makes the content that's there cheaper to produce. Then again, those RPGs also tend to have complex scripts, lots of quests and large worlds, so perhaps it evens out in the end.
I'd say that RPGs were the first genre I loved. Back in the days of the C64 I played pretty much anything I could get my hands on, whether puzzler, adventure, jump'n'run, sports game or poker game. The year I got both Bard's Tale III and Ultima V, though... That's pretty much what made me as a gamer.
Edit: O, AITIJGWEITAM.

I'm not going to be satisfied with the retro-western RPG kickstarter fad until inXile pulls out Dragon Wars 2 or Bard's Tale IV.

Since the smartass brigade has had no effect (seriously Starker: stop it). I'm going to post a glossary for this thread:
D:OS = Divinity: Original Sin (I'd never have figured this out with context BTW. It's not like you can even Google it.)
FO1: Fallout 1
FO2: Fallout 2
PAotRSPoD: 3 - Penny Arcade on the Rain Slick Precipice of Darkness 3
VTMB - Vampire the Masquerade Bloodlines
POE - Pillars of Eternity
W2 - Wasteland 2
ZylonBane/Jason, I'm not even going to bother trying to figure out yours :D
Thirith on 21/9/2014 at 17:07
Not sure how serious you are, Jason, but ten years ago a team made a game called Devil Whiskey, which is pretty much a modernised (well, by now somewhat old) Bard's Tale. I never played Dragon Wars, just like I didn't play Wasteland at the time - after Ultima V I was solidly in Lord British's camp, preferring more world-/story-focused RPGs to the more hack'n'slashy games, and Wasteland came out before I became an RPG addict.
